Electrified passenger vehicles more than triple in four years

A ccording to the Automotive Sector Statistics report, released today by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP), diesel was the type of energy that declined the most, representing only 8.8% (18,443) of registered passenger cars last year, when in 2020 it represented almost a third (32.8% or 47,741).
Gasoline also lost weight in four years, from 44.2% to 33.9% of light passenger vehicles, but the number of registered cars even increased from 64,232 to 71,072.
According to statistics released today, electric, plug-in and hybrid electric vehicles represented 19.9%, 13.5% and 16.7% of registered passenger cars, respectively, energy types that four years earlier together accounted for just a fifth of the market.
In 2024, 209,715 passenger vehicles were registered.
In light goods vehicles, there was also growth in electric vehicles, but more modestly, representing around 7% of the 32,304 registered vehicles in 2024 (it was less than 1% in 2020).
In 2024, diesel continued to be the most important type of energy, representing 92% of registered vehicles.
