Nissan may find a solution in Foxconn

Nissan Motor is in talks with Taiwan’s Foxconn on an electric vehicle partnership that could save its Oppama factory in Japan from closing, Nikkei business newspaper reported, citing an anonymous Nissan source. Nikkei said Nissan’s Oppama factory, which employs about 3,900 workers, is a potential consolidation target in the struggling Japanese automaker ’s restructuring plans, but the idea of building Foxconn-branded EVs on idled assembly lines could protect jobs and supplier networks. Nissan said in a statement that the report was not based on information released by the company itself. A Foxconn spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In May, Nissan’s junior partner Mitsubishi Motors signed a memorandum of understanding with a Foxconn subsidiary to supply Mitsubishi with an electric vehicle model.
