Owners of vehicles with license plates ending in 5 and 6 have until the end of September to pay mandatory vehicle licensing fees in the state of São Paulo without a fine.

This is the third month of the official calendar, which began in July with license plates ending in 1 and 2 and continued in August with license plates ending in 3 and 4. In October it will be the turn of vehicles ending in 7 and 8 (see the calendar below).

Price and where to pay

In total, around 21 million motorcycles, cars, vans and others must be licensed throughout 2025. This year's fee is R$167.74, and must be paid at one of the partner banks (Banco do Brasil, Bradesco, Caixa Econômica Federal, Itaú, Safra and Santander), via internet banking, app or ATM.

See below how to do the licensing:
  • To license a vehicle registered in São Paulo, you must first pay the Motor Vehicle Property Tax (IPVA) and any traffic fines;
  • During the licensing process, the person responsible for the vehicle must inform the National Motor Vehicle Registry (Renavam) number and then pay the fee;
  • After payment, the driver must download or print on plain sulfite paper the updated digital document from the Detran-SP, Poupatempo or Senatran portal, or from the Detran-SP , Poupatempo Digital and Carteira Digital de Trânsito (CDT) apps;
  • The document can be saved on your cell phone or saved in paper format.
What happens if I don't pay the licensing fee?

Licensing is mandatory and allows Detran-SP to have visibility and control over the vehicle fleet in circulation in the state. Failure to do so may result in the vehicle being impounded, which, once inspected, will be removed from the streets and taken to an accredited yard.

To give you an idea, in 2024, driving an unlicensed vehicle was the second-highest reason for traffic tickets in the state. The offense, considered extremely serious, is punishable by a fine of R$293.47 and seven points on the driver's license, in addition to the vehicle being impounded.
