Brazil needs to have 1 charging station for every 10 electric cars: 'We're behind'

Will there be an electric charging station on the way? One of the concerns Brazilians have when buying an electric or plug-in hybrid car is where to recharge them.
Currently, the country has 16,880 public and semi-public charging points for electrified vehicles , according to the latest update recorded in August by Tupi Mobilidade, in partnership with the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association.
Overall, there was a 14% growth in the country's total public and semi-public charging infrastructure network compared to the previous survey in February (14,827).
The fleet of plug-in electrified vehicles in Brazil totaled 302,225 units (from 2022 to August 2025), meaning there is a ratio of almost 18 vehicles per electric station, according to the association that represents the sector.
- 44.5% (134,592 vehicles) are 100% electric (BEV) and depend entirely on chargers;
- 55.5% (167,633) are plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and are partially dependent on charging infrastructure, as they also operate with a combustion engine.

For Júnior Miranda, CEO and co-founder of GreenV , a company that has already installed more than 10,000 residential charging points and 2,000 in dealerships and public places, Brazil is behind compared to other regions.

For the executive, in an ideal world, Brazil should have at least one electric charging station for every ten plug-in electrified vehicles.
Charger availability per chargeable vehicle (Global EV Outlook 2025):
- China: 1 for 9
- Europe: 1 for 12
Miranda emphasizes that investment should come from all sides.
In domestic projects, the company has contracts, some exclusive, with the following brands that sell electrified cars in Brazil: BYD, GWM, Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, BMW and GM.

The latest major market announcement was from Porsche (in partnership with GreenV) , which listened to its consumers and decided to invest R$70 million to install 66 ultra-fast DC chargers (150 kW) on highways. In total, there will be 104 points of this type by 2028. Porsche even wants to become the brand with the most ultra-fast chargers in Brazil .
This type of installation, in fact, is the fastest-growing in the country. The number of fast chargers (DC) jumped 59% in six months to 3,855 units.
Of the total number of existing electric charging stations (16,880), 77% (13,025) offer slow charging (AC), while 23% (3,855) are fast chargers (DC).
According to Bertoncello, "the 59% growth in fast chargers in six months shows that the market has already chosen to accelerate. Today, a network operator makes ten times more with the same investment as five years ago."

Expansion of Fast Chargers (DC):
- February 2025: 2,430
- August 2025: 3,855
- Growth: 59 %
Expansion of Slow Chargers (AC):
- February 2025: 12,397
- August 2025: 13,025
- Growth: 5%
Today, 1,499 Brazilian municipalities have public and semi-public charging stations. Compared to February 2025 (1,363), there was a 10% increase in infrastructure availability.
