No more plugging a charging cable into your car: the Porsche Cayenne Electric will be the first to offer a wireless inductive charging system.

No more plugging a charging cable into your car: the Porsche Cayenne Electric will be the first to offer a wireless inductive charging system.

Porsche will be the world's first car manufacturer to commercialize an inductive charging system for powering electric cars. The German automaker's innovative technology is being shown for the first time these days at the IAA in Munich (until September 14) on a prototype with fluorescent bodywork.

This new charging method, similar to that used for smartphones or electric toothbrushes, means there's no longer a need to plug a cable into the car or install a wall box or control unit. A single-piece base plate (One-Box) on the floor of the parking space is all that's needed.

The new, all-electric generation of the Cayenne Electric, scheduled for its world premiere at the end of 2025, will be the first Porsche model range to be available for order with this system. Also in 2026, the base plate will be available at Porsche Centres and the Porsche Shop online.

With a maximum charging power of up to 11 kW, this system from the German sports car manufacturer even matches a cabled alternating current (AC) connection. The efficiency of energy transfer from the mains to the battery reaches up to 90%. The Porsche Wireless Charge floor plate (with a length/width/height of 117/78/6 cm, respectively) is easy to use and can be installed in a garage or outdoor parking space and connected to the mains electricity grid.

However, contactless charging currently requires appropriate equipment in the car. The new Cayenne Electric will be the first model available with optional Porsche Wireless Charge preparation and the Porsche Wireless Plate. Protected from stones and atmospheric influences, the receiver unit is located in the underbody of the vehicle, between the front wheels.

The Porsche Wireless Charge base plate is also suitable for outdoor use, as it is protected against rain and snow.

To use it, simply park the Cayenne on the floor plate. Contactless energy transfer between the two units takes place at a distance of just a few centimeters. The vehicle will automatically lower itself. The base plate features a motion and foreign object detector. The charging process is automatically interrupted if a living thing comes between the vehicle and the floor plate or if a metal object is placed on it and heats up.

The floor plate, which weighs approximately 50 kilograms and has undergone extensive testing, is equipped with an LTE and WLAN module as standard, ensuring remote software updates and infrastructure support in the future. Porsche Wireless Charge will initially launch in Europe in 2026, with other markets around the world to follow later.

“Ease of use, everyday usability, and charging infrastructure continue to be decisive factors in the acceptance of electric mobility,” said Michael Steiner, Member of the Board of Management of Porsche AG responsible for Research and Development, during the presentation of the company's new wireless charging system. “We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”
