VW with new direction: New concept focuses on old values

VW with new direction: New concept focuses on old values

Volkswagen wants to return to its roots. At the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, the brand is demonstrating, under the motto "True Volkswagen," that it has understood the criticism of recent years. Instead of complex operating systems and a vague model policy, the company is returning to the qualities that once defined its success: clear shapes, solid quality, fair prices, and trusted names.

The new program is broadly based. In addition to the ID.3 , ID.4 , ID.5 , and ID.7, four additional electric cars are being introduced in the small and compact car segments. Particularly exciting are the new ID. Polo and the ID. Polo GTI , which for the first time mark the bridge between traditional model names and e-mobility. The ID. CROSS Concept also hints at Volkswagen's desire to demonstrate more bold design. The ID. EVERY1 , an electric subcompact for around €20,000, provides the basis for the new model, with which Wolfsburg promises to finally return to a truly popular approach.

At the same time, the company is staying on the ball with combustion engines. The Tiguan , Tayron, Passat , and the new T-Roc are intended to serve customers who aren't ready to say goodbye to gasoline and diesel. Special models like the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice also demonstrate that emotion and tradition have a place in the new brand identity.

But such a spirit of optimism isn't without critical questions. In recent years, Volkswagen has often strived to catch up with Tesla and the like, losing usability and character in the process. When people talk about intuitive user-friendliness, this can certainly be interpreted as an admission that the ID.3 and its siblings weren't always self-explanatory. The brand also suffered in terms of value for money. Whether a €20,000 electric car will actually become a reality remains to be seen. People have been talking about it for far too long. But the signs are good.

CEO Thomas Schäfer speaks of a return to its strengths and the goal of becoming the technologically leading volume manufacturer by 2030. These are big words that Volkswagen has used many times before. But this time, it seems as if the company is truly willing to learn from its mistakes. If design, quality, and everyday usability once again become the benchmark, True Volkswagen could become more than just a trade fair slogan.

Wolfsburg has understood that customers no longer want experiments at their own expense. Instead, they expect cars that deliver on the brand's promises for generations. The IAA 2025 is therefore not just a product showcase, but a signal: Volkswagen wants to be Volkswagen again.
