Used car check: Peugeot 2008 at the TÜV - only really good when young

The Peugeot 2008 isn't a true off-roader, but it does tempt some with its rustic charm. What technical features should you look for in this French car?
Many people like its looks, but an expert look under the hood reveals several flaws in the French SUV, according to the TÜV report. There's a crucial tip for used car buyers.
Striking body edges, comfortable entry, and an unusual cockpit with a small steering wheel and high-mounted gauges: The Peugeot 2008 may have its advantages. However, prospective buyers should also consider its performance in the general vehicle inspection (MVTI). "Those who are attracted to the visually appealing Peugeot should make sure it has a fresh sticker before purchasing," writes the "Auto Bild TÜV Report 2025."
Model history
As a crossover model based on the compact 208 without the option of all-wheel drive, the 2008 entered the German market in 2013. In 2016, the manufacturer completed a facelift: a redesigned front end, wider fenders, enhanced ESP for more traction, emergency braking assistance, rearview camera, and smartphone connectivity were among the innovations.
The second-generation 2008, launched in 2019, was about 15 centimeters longer and had a more angular design. Its facelift was in 2023 and was subtle. Its technological siblings are the Opel Mokka and the DS3 Crossback.
Body and variants
The 2008 is a five-door crossover, alternatively classified as a compact SUV. There are no body styles available, but the second generation is also available as an electric car, and its gasoline engine is available as a mild hybrid.
Dimensions (according to ADAC)
- First generation: 4.16 m x 1.74 m x 1.56 m (L x W x H); trunk volume: 350 l to 1194 l
- Second generation: 4.30 m x 1.77 m x 1.53 m (L x W x H); trunk volume: 405 l to 1467 l
Strengthen
A low loading floor and a sliding rear seat: The Peugeot has practical strengths for everyday driving. In its performance on the MOT test bench, the SUV generally performs better than average, especially in the chassis disciplines, which include springs and dampers, drive shafts, and the steering system.
Rust on the chassis is almost nonexistent. According to the report, the testers also expressed virtually no criticism of the parking brake, brake lines, and brake hoses.
Weaken
Criticism of the axle suspensions is voiced early on, i.e., at the first MOT after three years. Also attracting negative attention, with above-average complaint rates, at the latest by the second MOT after the vehicle's five-year age, are the brake discs: premature wear. At this point, oil loss also exceeds the average level.
At the fourth check, the foot brake, which is too ineffective, often adds to the list of negatives. At the same age of nine, the 2008 also often fails the emissions test (MOT).
Breakdown behavior
The ADAC classifies the Peugeot as a largely reliable car. Only models first registered in 2016 rank in the middle range in the club's breakdown statistics. The ADAC has identified two breakdown hotspots: incorrect oil pressure in 2017 models and faulty spark plugs (2016 and 2017).
