Following Kalle Rovanperä: Ott Tänak also bids farewell to the World Rally Championship.

(Motorsport-Total.com) - The World Rally Championship (WRC) is losing another former champion after Kalle Rovanperä . Ott Tänak has announced that he will end his career as a full-time WRC driver after the 2025 season. The Estonian, currently driving for Hyundai, plans to dedicate more time to his family.

The 2019 world champion had remained tight-lipped about his future in recent weeks. His retirement was confirmed at the rally weekend in Japan, where he finished fourth behind the Toyota trio of Sébastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans, and Sami Pajari. Whether Tänak will participate in any WRC events in 2026 remains to be seen.

“After many incredible years at the top of the WRC, I have decided that the end of the 2025 season is the right time to retire from full-time rallying,” explained Tänak. The Estonian had competed in the World Rally Championship on and off since 2009. In addition to his 2019 World Championship title, he achieved 22 victories and a total of 58 podium finishes.

"This is not a final goodbye"

"This is not a final goodbye. It's a chance to refocus and recharge. This sport has been a big part of my life, but now it's time to take a breather, spend more time with my family, and concentrate on life in Estonia," said Tänak.

"I would like to thank everyone at Hyundai Motorsport – from the engineers and mechanics to the management and our incredible fans worldwide. Together we have celebrated victories, overcome challenges, and created memories that I will always cherish. I am proud of what we have achieved and grateful for the team's trust and support. I will continue to love this sport and I am sure I will remain involved in some capacity," the Estonian driver continued.

Hyundai Motorsport President Cyril Abiteboul also praised Tänak's decision: "We were saddened to learn of Ott's decision, but understand his reasons for retiring from full-time rallying. We achieved a great deal together during two successful periods – from the first victory in Estonia to the 2020 manufacturers' title, along with eight wins and numerous podium finishes. Despite some setbacks, Ott always remained highly committed."

22 wins and 58 podium finishes in the WRC

"He is one of the best rally drivers in the world and a true legend in the sport. When all the factors come together, he is virtually unbeatable. Ott was an inspiration on and off the track, and we thank him for his contributions to the team. Even though we are now parting ways for the second time, Ott will remain part of the Hyundai family. Thank you, Ott – we hope our paths will cross again someday."

Hyundai confirmed that the driver lineup for the 2026 WRC season will be announced at a later date. Thierry Neuville, the 2024 world champion, and Adrien Fourmaux are expected to be part of the roster.
