Experts have revealed the one family car that retains its value better than any other on the market, with a surprising pick at number one. New analysis from Carmoola’s Car Depreciation Index, alongside vehicle data specialists Brego, found the Porsche Macan was the slowest-depreciating car on the road.

Data shows that the stunning SUV lost just 19.9% of its original value after three years on the road or 36,000 miles. The Toyota Yaris Cross was next, with the Japanese model retaining around one-fifth of its valuation (20.2%). Brego sales data looked at more than 40 million UK transactions in 2025 with Carmoola then examining average price trends for family cars.

Carmoola explained: “Our research shows that the Porsche Macan is the best family car for value retention, losing just 19.9 percent of its value over three years.

“The Toyota Yaris Cross follows closely behind, with a 20.2 percent depreciation rate. Both combine practicality, comfort, and strong resale value, making them smart choices for families looking to invest wisely.

“In fact, the average depreciation across all family models is 43.4 percent, so these two vehicles lose less than half the value of the typical car in the UK.”

According to analysis from WeBuyAnyCar, the Macan tends to hold its value well due to an ample supply of used car buyers. Meanwhile, CarSupermarket.com claims the model has “cracked the code of desirability” which helps drive demand for the machine.

The model has also been praised for its agile handling, sporty design and generous boot space. The Land Rover Discovery was next, with the popular model retaining 24.1% of its valuation after 35,000 miles or three years driving.

The Toyota RAV4 was next with the model retaining 24.3% of its value, followed by the Volkswagen Tiguan (25.3%). Experts at Carmoola warned that the biggest indicator of strong value retention was good reliability.

Carmoola added: “With millions of families expected to hit the road during the school holidays, reliability is more important than ever. A dependable car not only makes for a smoother journey but also tends to hold its value better. Choosing a family car that retains its value helps protect your budget today and in the future.”
