The best 5 cars for drivers desperate to avoid £5,000 fine for little-known law

Experts have revealed five of the best vehicles for motorists hoping to avoid a hefty £5,000 fine for breaking a simple rule. Motorists must ensure their pets are properly restrained while inside a vehicle for safety.
Unrestrained animals could be a major safety risk with road users at risk of a £5,000 fine if they are stopped by the police. Previous research from Halfords has shown that 32% of drivers who own a dog admit to not properly restraining their pet while driving. This number rises to a whopping 45% for young dog owners aged between 18 and 24. Cat Hendridge, better known as Cat the Vet, who has developed the 'Ultimate Dog-friendly Car Guide' in partnership with car search marketplace Cazoo, stressed that spacious boots were vital for dog owners to allow pooches to stretch out and feel comfortable.
This makes the Skoda Super a great option with enough room for dog supplies and a low boot lip making it easily accessible for more senior dogs.
The Ford Puma is also among the top picks within the vehicle’s clever "MegaBox" storage idea. Cars fitted with climate control, a smooth suspension and a washable interior were also vital criteria.
Cat said: "Every dog owner loves to get out and about with their pets and travelling in the car means the world is open to you for walks and adventures!
"So choosing a car that is suitable for your dog and ensures they have a safe and comfortable travelling experience is really important."
However, it is important road users made sure to keep their dog properly restrained at all times regardless of the vehicle they are travelling in.
Cat added: "Smaller breeds of dogs are often comfortable travelling in the back seat, but it is very important they are safely and legally restrained."
The Tesla Model Y has its own dedicated "Dog Mode", which can keep the cabin temperature safe for dogs when a vehicle is parked up.
Experts also suggested the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate was a great option with the car praised for its smooth suspension and spacious boot.
The Volvo V60 Cross Country has also been selected with a soft suspension built for tackling uneven terrain. This will reduce the discomfort for a dog and could be ideal for longer journeys.
Lucy Tugby, Marketing Director at Cazoo, said: “We understand that for many, pets are part of the family, and their comfort and safety are paramount.”
