Kim Nilsson announced as Wildcard for the 2025 Speedway GP of Sweden

Kim Nilsson announced as Wildcard for the 2025 Speedway GP of Sweden

Sweden’s former FIM Speedway Grand Prix star Kim Nilsson returns to the sport’s biggest stage as wild card for the Virkvarn FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla on Saturday, July 5.

For a second straight season, Nilsson lines up in the famous No.16 race jacket, joining world No.3 Fredrik Lindgren in flying the home flag on Sweden’s biggest weekend of speedway, which also features the Virkvarn FIM SGP2 of Sweden – Malilla on Friday, July 4 – the opening round of the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship.

The Malilla wild card was originally due to be handed to the winner of the 2025 Swedish Championship Final in Norrkoping on Tuesday. But with the national title showdown postponed due to rain and set to be restaged on August 11, Nilsson, who claimed the 2024 Malilla wild card as Swedish Championship runner-up to winner Lindgren, has been handed the chance to make his Speedway GP return.

Nilsson won the 2022 FIM SGP Challenge in Glasgow, Great Britain, to secure a full-time spot in the 2023 Speedway GP series, finishing 13th with 44 points. He also served as a substitute rider for the 2024 championship, scoring eight points from three rounds.

The Stockholm-born star races for Smederna in Sweden’s Bauhaus Elitserien, as well as Masarna in the country’s Allsvenskan League. He also competes for Landshut – a German team racing in Poland’s National League.

The line-up for the Virkvarn FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla is completed by track reserves Rasmus Karlsson and Sammy van Dyck.

No.17 Karlsson raced to FIM Speedway Youth World Championship gold in the 2023 FIM SGP3 Final staged in Malilla for the sport’s under-16, 250cc stars.

No.18 Van Dyck also competes as wild card in the Virkvarn FIM SGP2 of Sweden – Malilla and is second substitute rider for SGP2 this season.

Tickets for two nights of FIM Speedway action in Malilla are still available online. Secure your Speedway GP tickets HERE, and SGP2 tickets are available HERE.
