The chase is over for Briscoe, as the Indiana native captured his first win of the 2025 NASCAR Cup season as the newest member of the Joe Gibbs Racing team. Briscoe’s first win came in front of the sold-out crowd of race fans at Pocono Raceway for The Great American Getaway 400 presented by VisitPA.com.
Ultimately it was a race against the sunset, as the race was delayed for two and a half hours as thunderstorms rolled through the area at the posted start time. The closing laps of the race also provided drama, as on the last pit stop Briscoe left the pit box a few seconds early as well as a few gallons short of a full tank of gas.
Briscoe teammate Denny Hamlin, the winningest driver in track history with seven wins at the Tricky Triangle, was aware of the fuel saving situation that Briscoe faced. Hamlin and two-time Pocono winner, Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney directly in his rearview mirror were pushing Briscoe lap after closing lap.
There were moments towards the end that looked like Hamlin would overtake his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, but Briscoe perfectly executed throttle control to maintain the lead and not run out of gas – ultimately beating Hamlin across the line by a 0.7 second margin of victory.
Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney claimed the final spot on the podium for the day, after a series of battles of his own during the race. Blaney started the race P20 on the 10th row after making adjustments to his car following qualifying. The No. 12 Penske driver also battled a failed cool suit that malfunctioned early in the race.
Heat index temps at the famous racetrack in Long Pond, PA yesterday topped triple digits and upon exiting his vehicle after the race Blaney fell to his knees multiple times, clearly exhausted. He got up briefly to do a TV interview and went back down and stayed down, waiting for the safety team to take him to the infield care center.
Brad Keselowski noted after the race, “Most all of the drivers were still sick and dehydrated from last week’s race in Mexico City. I’ve never seen so many sick drivers before the start of the race”, Keselowski said.
Drivers filling out the top ten were: Chris Buescher P4, Chase Elliot P5, John Hunter Nemechek P6, Kyle Larson P7, Ryan Preece P8, Brad Keselowski P9 and Austin Cindric P10.
On Sunday at the Pocono Raceway Media Center, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro addressed members of the media highlighting that his administration has partnered with the racetrack, aligning the race with Pennsylvania’s tourism brand, The Great American Getaway. Governor Shapiro served as honorary starter for The Great American Getaway 400 presented by VisitPA.com. The Governor noted that the annual race, with 60 years of racing history held in the Pocono Mountains, injects up to $100 million into the Pennsylvania economy!Thousands of race fans sold out the grandstands & infield this weekend in the annual stop in the NASCAR series.
