Blue badge holders can also apply for little-known free travel perk

Blue Badge holders and any driver above the age of 60 could get access to a major free travel perk in one part of the UK. Disabled motorists and older drivers are liable for free bus travel in areas of Scotland in a major win for residents.
Locals need to simply apply for a National Entitlement Card with free unlimited travel on affiliated bus routes at any time of the day thrown in. It means that those handing over their driving licence and giving up their freedom can get around without paying. Transport Scotland said the system also allows older and disabled people to enjoy improved access to services, facilities and social networks.
It could also improve health by promoting a more active lifestyle for elderly and disabled residents.
Transport Scotland said: “If you are over 60 or have a disability, you could be eligible for free bus travel to get around Scotland and your local area. You can access this via the National Entitlement Card, your pass to free bus travel in Scotland.
“The scheme provides free travel on registered local and long-distance bus services throughout Scotland, at any time of day for any number of journeys. Only some services premium-fare services, tours/excursions and group hire services are excluded.”
However, Transport Scotland said the scheme could “promote a modal shift from private cars to public transport”. As an added bonus, the National Entitlement Card scheme allows free travel for any companions of eligible disabled people.
Individuals can apply for a National Entitlement Card online, through the local council, or at a Post Office branch. However, applicants will need to provide a copy of benefit award letters from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or Social Security Scotland.
Councils will usually be in touch around four to six weeks before a card expires to see if individuals wish to renew.
Transport Scotland explained: “When you get on the bus, look for the electronic ticket machine by the door to the driver's compartment. Place your card on the machine with your photograph facing up and tell the driver your stop. The driver will help you if you need assistance.”
