Norris , third in the sprint race held this morning, set his best lap in 1:40.562 minutes, beating Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren), the championship leader, by 0.085 seconds, with Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in third, 0.338 seconds behind.

"It was a decent lap and I'm happy. The car has been flying all weekend, Oscar [Piastri] has too and we've been supporting each other," Norris said.

The World Cup leader admitted that finishing in second place "was disappointing."

"The second lap was going well. It's small margins and it's not a bad place to start," he noted.

Piastri was unable to improve on his time from his first attempt and had to settle for second place, but he was safe from the final attack by Charles Leclerc, who stole third from Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull).

"I'm very happy. It's very strange to say this because we're three tenths behind and in third place, but we thought we'd be further back," said the Ferrari Monegasque.

Max Verstappen, who won the sprint, was fourth, ahead of Thai Alexander Albon (Williams).

One of the surprises of the day was the 16th place finish of British driver Lewis Hamilton, in the second Ferrari, who had his lap disqualified for exceeding track limits.

This was the 13th pole position of Lando Norris's career, the fourth this season, after those achieved in Australia, Monaco and Austria.

Oscar Piastri leads the World Cup with a nine-point lead over Lando Norris.

The main race will be held on Sunday.
