Volvo Car Spain wins the 2025 European Road Safety Award for road safety education

Volvo Car Spain wins the 2025 European Road Safety Award for road safety education

Volvo Car Spain has been recognized with the European Road Safety Award 2025 in the Education category, a recognition granted by the European Commission through the European Road Safety Charter. The award recognizes the Spanish subsidiary's work in promoting road safety and raising awareness from an early age through its Volvo Initiative educational program.

The awards ceremony was held in Brussels , chaired by Anna Panagopoulou, Head of Cabinet of the Commission for Sustainability, Transport and Tourism, and Kristian Schmidt, Road Safety Coordinator and Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission. José María Galofré, CEO and Managing Director of Volvo Car Spain, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

Road safety training in the classroom

The Volvo Initiative has established itself as a benchmark in road safety education at the European level, having trained nearly 40,000 students between the ages of 8 and 12 in more than 300 educational centers in Spain . Its twelfth edition, organized in conjunction with the ONCE Foundation , brought together 160 students and teachers at the foundation's headquarters, concluding a cycle in which more than 2,100 primary school students, organized into more than 330 teams, participated in the Online Challenge.

During the closing ceremony, José María Galofré and José Luis Martínez Donoso, CEO of the ONCE Foundation, highlighted the students' creativity and commitment to more inclusive and sustainable mobility. The initiative integrates the Lego Education methodology, allowing students to design, program, and build prototypes of the Volvo XC60 model, exploring ways to make it safer, more accessible, and more sustainable.

This approach fosters essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork, while promoting a culture of responsible mobility from childhood.

Recognition of Volvo's leadership in road safety

With this award, the European Commission recognizes Volvo Car Spain's efforts to educate responsible citizens and its prominent role in road safety education, aligned with the principles of sustainability and safety that define the Swedish brand.

"Receiving this important award is a source of tremendous pride for all of us at Volvo Car Spain. Twelve years ago, we launched the Volvo Initiative with the dream of teaching young people that safety and sustainability must go hand in hand. This European recognition motivates us to continue fostering this culture of respect and responsibility," said José María Galofré after collecting the trophy in Brussels.
