It all happened in a few seconds, but the risk was very high and luckily the worst was avoided by a hair's breadth. On the A23 motorway, at dawn a few days ago, two trucks took an exit in the wrong direction , spreading fear along the asphalt that leads to Udine. A crazy manoeuvre, caught on security cameras and today released by the Amaro Highway Police.

The tragedy was averted by the prompt intervention of the agents, alerted by the intelligent sensors scattered along the network and by several reports from passing motorists. No one was hurt. But the mistake had immediate consequences. Luckily, this time we can tell a happy ending.

The video that freezes your blood

The images, made public by the Police on their social media channels, speak for themselves: two trucks enter the wrong junction, with the dawn lights barely illuminating the windshield. The lanes, miraculously empty, become a tragic hypothesis for a moment. The film, silent but eloquent, shows the flow of danger : headlights on, wide curves, the opposite direction of travel. In those frames there is all the tension of recklessness. And a filigree thought: what if at that moment a family, a bus, a patrol had arrived? Better not to delve into such lucubrations.

Fortunately, the Amaro Traffic Police operations center reacted in a few moments . The monitoring system and automatic alarms reported the wrong-way traffic in real time. Some drivers, noticing the silhouettes of heavy vehicles going the wrong way, immediately called the emergency number, helping to create a virtuous chain of alerts. The patrols managed to intercept the two vehicles and stop them without incident. A delicate maneuver, in which every second counted more than ever.

License withdrawn, trucks stopped

The recklessness of the maneuver was followed by a firm and immediate response. The two truck drivers — whose personal details were not disclosed — had their driving licenses revoked on the spot. The trucks were placed under administrative detention for three months, and the drivers were also given a heavy fine. Severe measures, but unavoidable. Because road safety, especially in high-intensity contexts such as motorways, cannot be left to chance .

A senseless gesture

Entering a highway in the wrong direction is not just an infraction. It is an act that can cost lives. Often linked to carelessness, tiredness or incorrect reading of signs, in this case it remains unclear whether the maneuver was the result of confusion, human error or something else. What is certain is that the episode has raised yet another alarm bell. The combined use of technology (sensors, cameras, artificial intelligence) and human alertness has avoided the worst. But fate does not always grant a second try.

On any given dawn, along any given stretch of the A23, two trucks headed toward danger, taking the wrong road. What saved them — and those who were coming — was not chance, but the coordination between technology and human agents . The tragedy remained suspended in mid-air, stopped in time. But the warning remains clear: every junction can be a watershed. Every mistake, a potential piece of news that no one would want to read.
