Here Comes Stla AutoDrive, Level 3 Autonomous Driving According to Stellantis

ROME - Stellantis launches Stla AutoDrive 1.0, the first autonomous driving system developed in-house that offers SAE Level 3 functionality (hands-free and eyes closed). The system enables autonomous driving at speeds of up to 60 km/h, reducing the driver's active role in stop-and-go traffic, offering greater freedom on board the car. According to the company, Stla AutoDrive is ideal for those driving in high-density urban areas, and will allow drivers to dedicate part of their time on board to activities other than driving, such as watching a movie, reading emails, browsing a book or simply enjoying the scenery.

“At Stellantis, helping drivers make the best use of their time is extremely important,” said Ned Curic, chief engineering and technology officer, Stellantis. “By managing routine driving tasks, Stla AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making the on-board experience more efficient and enjoyable.” Stellantis engineers have fine-tuned Stla AutoDrive to react quickly and naturally, ensuring the system is smooth, reliable and similar to a car driven by a human. When traffic and environmental conditions allow, the driver is notified that Stla AutoDrive can be activated. Once activated via a button, the system takes control of the car, maintaining a safe distance, adjusting speed and managing steering and braking based on the flow of traffic. The device continuously monitors the surrounding environment through a series of sensors to ensure precise and safe driving and reliable operation even when driving in the dark or, for example, in light rain.
To ensure the perfect efficiency of Stla AutoDrive, an automatic sensor cleaning system cleans critical components while maintaining optimal reliability and functionality. At higher speeds, it offers the convenience of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping functions in Level 2 (hands on the wheel) and Level 2+ (hands free, eyes on the road) modes. Designed on a scalable architecture, the system is ready to be adapted to the cars of the Stellantis group brands and is connected to the cloud to allow continuous improvements thanks to over-the-air updates and real-time data integration.
It should be noted that Stla AutoDrive complies with current regulations (including regional ones) in supported markets and requires the driver to remain seated, belted and ready to take control when required. Stla AutoDrive has been designed as an evolving platform, with ongoing developments and future updates potentially capable of offering hands-free, eyes-closed operation at higher speeds, up to 95 km/h and improved off-road automation for some models.
