Ford Ranger Phev, plug-in hybrid adventure format: how much it costs and how it goes

Ford Ranger is now also a Plug-in hybrid and becomes an ideal vehicle for work and leisure. It's just a shame that in Italy these vehicles are penalized by an anachronistic regulation. We went to get to know the new 5-seater pick-up in Iceland between rough paths and volcanic rock roads, fording rivers and tackling slopes and descents. And the conclusion is very simple: it is a comfortable, well-made vehicle that is much more premium than many trendy SUVs because here we are faced with concreteness and robustness, with a taste for essential and well-made things. Of course, the materials are not luxurious but everything is very solid with valid ergonomics and impeccable comfort for the type of vehicle. The new rechargeable hybrid powertrain also allows for reduced consumption and has four modes of use that allow you to manage, depending on your needs, the battery that offers about 40 km of electric travel.

Ford introduces a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time in the Ranger range, without compromising on load-carrying capacity, off-road performance or professional functionality. The technical architecture is based on a familiar platform, updated to integrate the new hybrid transmission, optimised for use in mixed on-road and operational contexts.
The Ranger PHEV powertrain combines a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with a 75kW electric motor, powered by an 11.8kWh net lithium-ion battery. The 10-speed automatic transmission integrates a modular hybrid module that actively manages the decoupling between the two energy sources via an electromechanical actuator.
The system enables several modes of electric traction management, including Auto EV mode, which automatically uses electric mode, EV Now mode which prioritises electric traction, EV Later mode which saves charge for later use, and EV Charge mode which activates charging via the combustion engine.
The battery can be recharged via an external network with a 16 A single-phase charger, requiring less than four hours for a full charge. Charging via regenerative braking or internal combustion engine is also possible.

Combined power output is 281PS, with peak torque of 697Nm – more than any Ranger before. The e-4WD system, with automatic power split and the option of a locking rear differential, is supported by a two-range transfer case and selectable driving modes for different scenarios, including road, mud, sand or towing.
We tested it on really rough terrain and found that the traction is always adequate for the needs. Obviously it does not offer the comfort of a Land Rover but we are talking about a vehicle born for work that offers a truly heavy duty functionality.
The Ranger Phev retains the full towing capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload of around one tonne. The mechanical configuration includes redesigned rear side members to house the battery and revised suspension to compensate for the different weight distribution compared to the internal combustion versions.
A distinctive feature is the introduction of the Pro Power Onboard system, with the possibility of supplying electrical energy directly from the traction battery. Two configurations are available: one with 2.3 kW, suitable for example for powering a portable refrigerator or light tools; and one with 6.9 kW (3.45 kW for each socket), designed for professional construction site equipment such as concrete mixers, lights and high-power electric tools.
The rear cargo bed retains standard pallet compatibility and includes useful features such as the Easy Lift tailgate and integrated lighting. The cabin seats up to five people and includes an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, 12-inch portrait center display and SYNC 4A infotainment system.

Standard technologies include pre-collision assist, lane keeping assist and a rearview camera. Pro Trailer Backup Assist also enables easier trailer maneuvering using a dedicated controller and central display monitoring.
The Ranger PHEV is available in XLT, Wildtrak and Stormtrak (launch edition) trims, each with specific features designed to suit different operational needs. The Wildtrak trim includes 360-degree lighting and heated front seats, while the Stormtrak version stands out for the presence of Matrix LED headlights, a 10-speaker B&O sound system, 2.3kW Pro Power Onboard module and an adjustable sports bar.
The configuration features a five-seater double cab and a cargo bed designed to accommodate a euro pallet between the wheel arches. Users can customize the vehicle with dealer-fitted accessories such as rear covers, cargo bed covers or equipment for specialized uses, ranging from beekeeping to firefighting.

The price list is that we publish with VAT to be added because it is a commercial vehicle and competitive compared to similar models.
It goes for 48 thousand euros + VAT for the XLT version, which becomes 55,500 euros + VAT for the Wildtrak variant. The top of the range Stormtrak reaches 60 thousand euros + VAT.
