Byd meets the Italian component supply chain to find new suppliers

Byd meets the Italian component supply chain to find new suppliers

Byd , with the support of Anfia (National Association of the Automotive Industry Supply Chain), met in Turin with representatives of the Italian components supply chain. A total of 380 companies participated in the "Byd Supplier Meeting". The reason for the meeting? Byd's search for suppliers for new industrial sites in Europe , the first of which in Hungary should start production operations in the last quarter of 2025. The Chinese company also held 176 BtoB meetings with individual companies from all over Italy.

The meeting between BYD and the Italian components supply chain takes place in a delicate period for the automotive sector, especially that of our country. In Italy, 310 thousand cars were produced in 2024 (-42.8% on 2023) and 591 thousand motor vehicles (-32.3%), according to preliminary data from Anfia. Given the numbers, which indicate a significant drop in production, it goes without saying that the domestic market is offering fewer commercial opportunities to the components sector compared to other historical periods. Even looking outside of Italy, however, the situation is not the rosiest. The automotive industry in Germany is experiencing a period of crisis that is also having effects on the Italian supply chain of components, with German manufacturers being the largest customers of the latter. Even at an intercontinental level, the waters are far from calm, with Trump having promised significant duties on car imports. Let's not forget the Europe-China clash regarding electric cars, with the EU having imposed duties on imports of plug-in vehicles from the People's Republic. The cars produced by BYD in its European factories, however, will not be subject to tariffs, as they are assembled in the Old Continent. In a market where the demand for Italian components is declining on all fronts, the new industrial establishments of the Chinese company could represent an unexpected commercial outlet for our companies.

These are the words of Roberto Vavassori, president of Anfia: "The quality, innovation and flexibility that have always distinguished Italian component companies have an important additional opportunity to assert themselves in relation to BYD's production investments in Europe. This initiative is part of the moments of discussion that Anfia seeks to facilitate to help companies seize new opportunities, understand market trends and maintain and improve their positioning, with the aim of creating a competitive context that enhances Italian excellence". These are the statements of Alfredo Altavilla, Europe Special Advisor of BYD: "I thank the top management of BYD, Anfia and the Institutions for the opportunity offered to the Italian components industry. I am extremely satisfied to have created this link between BYD and our industrial supply chain, made up of companies that represent the excellence of Italian know-how. These companies stand out for a know-how that is unmatched in the international panorama and that the whole world recognizes. Italy is the first country involved in this activity and I believe it is right to offer our companies the opportunity to return to being active protagonists of the future of mobility, especially in this delicate phase of technological transition, in which they can play a fundamental role. The opening of European industrial sites, starting from Hungary, by BYD, the largest international tech company, is part of the medium-term strategy of selling cars produced in the Region in Europe, and is the demonstration of how the sector needs to create a system towards those who want to invest in Europe".
