GM halts pickup truck production at its Silao plant

GM halts pickup truck production at its Silao plant

Silao , Guanajato.- General Motors has halted production of pickup trucks at its Silao plant for several weeks, consequently reducing output of its best-selling vehicles, people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

GM's assembly plant, which specializes in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, was idled for the first two weeks of July and is scheduled to shut down again the weeks of Aug. 4 and 11, two people familiar with the matter said.

GM did not confirm the exact timeline.

The planned downtime weeks at GM Silao are part of a standard operating process focused on optimizing production at our manufacturing facility," GM said in response to a Reuters query.

The Silverado and the mechanically similar Sierra are GM's best-selling models in the United States and its main profit generators. GM also manufactures the Silverado and Sierra in Fort Wayne, Flint, and Ontario, Canada.

It's common for automakers to halt factory operations to perform maintenance or adjust assembly lines for model changes.

Most GM factories in the United States were closed last week as part of the usual week of downtime for the July 4th holiday.

However, several weeks of downtime is unusual for a factory that makes GM's most popular models.

Trucks are the biggest moneymakers for GM, Ford, and Stellantis, and their truck plants often operate around the clock.

GM sold 278,599 Silverados in the first half of 2025 , 2.0% more than the same period last year.

Additionally, it sold 166,409 Sierra pickup trucks during the same period, a 12% increase compared to the first half of 2024.

President Donald Trump's trade war has disrupted supply chains and work at automakers and parts suppliers in recent months.

Some automakers have changed production plans to mitigate the impact of Trump's tariffs on imported cars.

China's retaliatory restrictions on magnets and other parts containing rare earth metals have also disrupted operations.
