Now the Transport Minister is talking about new driving tests for seniors

The EU has limited the validity of driver's licenses. In this context, there are repeated calls for driving tests for senior citizens who want to retain their license, as well as voluntary "feedback drives." In an interview, Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has now clearly rejected this idea.

The new Transport Minister, Patrick Schnieder, rejects the mandatory feedback drive for seniors, which insurers have long proposed and which has no direct impact on driver's licenses. "According to statistics, the number of accidents among older people is not significantly higher than among others. As long as I don't have this significance, such measures are unnecessary," Schnieder said in an interview with "Auto Motor & Sport." "Otherwise, you would deprive people of opportunities and also create additional bureaucratic burdens. I see no basis for this in the end. The numbers don't support it."

In addition, seniors often handle the issue of their ability to drive sensibly, says Schnieder. "There are many older people who handle this issue very responsibly and assess themselves correctly, stop driving, or even surrender their driver's license." He believes it's better to raise awareness and better assess oneself in such a situation. "If you see a 75-year-old today, they're someone different than they were 20 years ago. I always find rigid measures difficult."
