(Motorsport-Total.com) - A serious setback for the reigning champion: Jorge Martin, who underwent surgery on his right hand on February 7th after crashing during the Sepang test , has to undergo another operation.
Jorge Martin will not take part in the MotoGP season opener in Buriram Zoom
The 2024 MotoGP World Champion will not be able to take part in the season opener, the Grand Prix of Thailand next weekend, after sustaining an injury to his left hand on Monday that requires surgery.
The Spaniard was recovering from the injury he sustained on the first day of pre-season testing in Sepang, when Martin fell twice after just a few laps, suffering fractures in his right hand and left foot.
After spending 24 hours under observation for a serious head injury, the Aprilia rider travelled to Barcelona where he was operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir on February 7. A spacer plate was inserted in the fifth finger of his right hand. The aim was to be fit for the start of the season.
On Monday, Martin's entourage assured Motorsport.com Spain, a sister site of Motorsport-Total.com , that he is fine, training and preparing to travel to Thailand on Tuesday to pass the medical examination on Thursday and start training on Friday.
However, as Motorsport.com has learned, Martin suffered another injury during practice on Monday morning and will have to undergo surgery on his left hand on Tuesday as he has sustained a fracture there.
With this injury, the Spanish rider will not be able to take part in the first race of the year. The duration of his recovery remains to be seen.
The 2025 MotoGP season begins this weekend with the Grand Prix of Thailand in Buriram. It then continues in Argentina from March 14 to 16.
As a replacement for Martin, Aprilia could use its test rider Lorenzo Savadori. The brand from Noale already sent the 31-year-old out on the track last week at the test in Buriram to collect valuable kilometers with the RS-GP.
