Enea Bastianini is doing well in sixth place this session, but now he has to stop. He rolls into the emergency exit before Turn 5. It's difficult to see what's wrong with his KTM.

1. Free practice, sunshine

Jack Miller is now back on track. He is currently in 18th place. The best Yamaha rider is, of all people, his teammate Miguel Oliveira in seventh. The Portuguese will no longer have a regular MotoGP seat in 2026, that has now been definitively confirmed.
What's Francesco Bagnaia doing? We could actually ask this question about his entire season. The Italian's bike has been tinkered with a lot again. He's currently in 22nd place. Things are still going well for our two injured riders, however. Maverick Vinales has just moved up to 10th place. Aleix Espargaro is also doing well in 13th.
Most riders have now returned to the pits. The Marquez brothers' closest rival is now Johann Zarco . Honda extended the Frenchman's contract until 2027 this week. Well deserved, as he's showing no signs of aging at all.
There's the first crash of the session. Jack Miller was caught in Turn 10. The Australian leaves the scene apparently uninjured. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin is pulling his own stunt again in Turn 5. The image of the 'Martinator' with his shoulder on the kerb went viral last year.
The track doesn't suit him? Yes, you could say that. Marc Marquez is 'only' two-tenths faster than his brother Alex Marquez . Behind him, there's a larger gap to Pedro Acosta. Vinales has now dropped back to 11th place, but that's still very respectable, of course.
It's only the first lap, but that's a good sign from Maverick Vinales . The KTM rider is taking the lead. Of course, his times will continue to drop.
And then the premier class takes to the track in full force. Will Marc Marquez beat everyone again? He doesn't really like his home track, but on the Ducati, the old Honda statistics no longer seem to hold true.
Before the 45 minutes begin, there's a hard-to-believe and actually quite sad fact. We're now at race number 15, and this is the first official session of the season in which all the regular riders are participating. This is, of course, primarily due to World Champion Jorge Martin 's long injury. But since the Spaniard returned, at least one of his teammates has always been missing. If Vinales holds out, Sunday could be the first race with all the regular riders.
MotoGP returns for the first time today. The focus is on two riders in particular. While Somkiat Chantra appears to be fit again, there are question marks over the condition of returning rider Maverick Vinales and wildcard rider Aleix Espargaro . They will have another medical check after FP1. Since Lorenzo Savadori is also a wildcard rider for Aprilia, we have 24 starters this time. Free practice begins at 10:45 a.m.
In the end, it was Dani Holgado who secured the fastest time at the opening lap of the Moto2 weekend. The rookie beat Barry Baltus and Manuel Gonzalez by about one and a half tenths. Aron Canet finished fifth. Diogo Moreira finished only 17th.
Filip Salac has now taken the lead. Alber Arenas and Senna Agius are also fast. A lot can still happen in the closing stages. Grip is getting better and better.
Celestino Vietti was the first to put on a new set of tires, and he's really flying. The Italian shaved almost four-tenths off Gonzalez's old record. So there's still a lot to play for here.
David Alonso is driving a kind of acceleration run. He's getting a little faster with each lap. But that's not really putting him far ahead. The winner from Hungary is currently only in 21st place.
Now a familiar picture at the front. Manuel Gonzalez set a new best time, but only 22 thousandths of a second ahead of Dixon. Diogo Moreira is in third place, just ahead of Dani Holgado. The four are within a tenth of each other.
Jake Dixon secures the lead in the opening laps, with the Intact duo of Manuel Gonzalez and Senna Agius right behind him. The Australian is back in the lead immediately after his injury.
The lights change and the Moto2 riders get going. We welcome back Intact rider Senna Agius. The Australian was injured in Austria and is now making his comeback.
Then we turn our attention to the intermediate class. Moto2 starts at 9:50 a.m. and has 40 minutes for its first free practice session.
The final minutes clearly belong to World Championship leader Jose Rueda. The Spaniard shaves more than half a second off the fastest time. Only David Munoz can keep up with him, coming in two-tenths behind. Adrian Fernandez secures third place after a long lead. However, the best Honda rider is already more than half a second behind. Noah Dettwiler can't get past 23rd place.
Now Fernandez has been replaced. Valentin Perrone and David Munoz were slightly faster. The pace is now being applied again in the final phase. Meanwhile, we see the next crash at Turn 5. It's Carraro's teammate, Ricardo Rossi. However, the Italian is able to remount and continue.
Joel Kelso tries to secure the fastest time with fresh tires, but he can't overtake Adrian Fernandez. The Australian is 18 thousandths of a second behind. Meanwhile, Nicola Carraco causes the second crash of the session at Turn 5. This is a classic here in Barcelona and, fortunately, was much less serious than Quiles's earlier crash.
The first crash of the day is unfortunately a very ugly one. Max Quiles loses the front end in Turn 13 and is then thrown through the gravel trap. He even loses his visor in the process, but at least he manages to get back up straight away, albeit visibly shaken. The Aspar team will have a lot of work to do on his bike until this afternoon. The session is certainly over for the rookie.
Now the point seems to have come where track grip and tire wear are balancing each other out. We've still made a few improvements, but most of the time monitor remains gray. Adrian Fernandez leads by a tenth of a second ahead of Ryusei Yamanaka. Max Quiles and Jose Rueda follow.
With each lap, the drivers gain grip and improve. However, no one can pull away. Angel Piqueras is currently in the lead, but the top nine are all within half a second of each other. They are improving at the same rate.
It's starting. The Moto3 riders are heading out for their first free practice session. 35 minutes are available.
The 20 degrees Celsius air temperature was to be expected here this morning. But the fact that the track is already at 41 degrees Celsius is astonishing. Perhaps this is a measurement error, who knows. Asphalt temperatures like these aren't helpful, as the Circuit de Barcelona already offers little grip; at least the tires shouldn't overheat.

The third race of the MotoGP season is underway on Spanish soil, or should we say Catalan soil? For the Marquez brothers, it's their home race here just outside Barcelona . Dominator Marc doesn't really like the track layout; he's only won here twice. But in his current top form, he can be trusted to achieve anything. Today's practice session, Friday, will be all about making it into Q2. As always, Moto3 kicks things off. Their practice begins at 9:00 a.m. We'll be following you throughout the day in our live ticker.
