We now come to Q2. The favorites for pole position are Marc Marquez , Marc Marquez, and Marc Marquez. Can anyone challenge the Sachsenring dominator? Zarco and Vinales actually have a slight advantage over him, having already had a chance to familiarize themselves with the conditions in Q1. It starts at 11:15 a.m.
1st Qualifying, Light Rain
Luca Marini will start his comeback from 15th place. Behind him are Raul Fernandez (16th), Joan Mir (17th), and Alex Rins (18th). Rain troublemaker Ai Ogura at least managed to keep one rider behind him. He will start the race from 19th. Lorenzo Savadori completes the starting grid in 20th.
Maverick Vinales put a stop to any suspense. He set a new fastest time, which was subsequently beaten only by Zarco. Both advanced. Only Miguel Oliveira and Fermin Aldeguer managed to keep the gap under a second, thus starting from 13th and 14th, respectively. The latter is thus out of Q2 for the first time since Argentina.
Johann Zarco has beaten his time once again. He now has a buffer of over half a second over the rest. The track would have to improve significantly in these final minutes for him to not advance. Second place, however, will now be a shootout with fresh rain tires.
There are further improvements, but this time Johann Zarco sets the clear best time ahead of Vinales. The latter isn't safe, with Miguel Oliveira and Fermin Aldeguer lurking just behind. Several riders decide to get new tires from the pits halfway through the session.
No surprises at the front after the first few laps. Maverick Vinales is comfortably in the lead, with Johann Zarco in second. His closest rival is Joan Mir, but he's already four-tenths behind the Frenchman.
Q1 has begun. Based on the impressions from FP2, Maverick Vinales and Johann Zarco should clearly advance. But there are also several other candidates in the mix, such as Fermin Aldeguer, Miguel Oliveira, and Joan Mir. And then there's the question of the weather. It just started raining again.
And then we continue with qualifying. Q1 starts at 10:50 a.m. The weather here is unpredictable. Towards the end of FP2, there were drier track conditions in some places. But of course, it could start raining again at any time. It's impossible to predict when the fastest conditions will be here and which tires will secure pole position.
Maverick Vinales was even faster than Acosta, but Marc Marquez couldn't stand this insult. He went for it again and beat his compatriot by almost two tenths. Jack Miller finished fourth, ahead of Alex Marquez, who also improved his time once again.
2nd Free Practice, Light Rain
Not bad! The pace is up again in this final phase, and Pedro Acosta shows off his talent. Although Marc Marquez has pushed himself further, the KTM rider is over two-tenths faster.
Yesterday, Ai Ogura revealed to us with remarkable honesty that he's bad in the rain. Unfortunately, this has been clearly confirmed. The Japanese rider is last, one and a half seconds behind the second-to-last rider. He can only hope that it will at least dry out tomorrow.
In dry conditions, the Ducati riders would certainly be Marc Marquez's first challengers, but here they're positioned in the midfield. Alex Marquez is eighth, Francesco Bagnaia in eleventh, and Fabio di Giannantonio in just 13th. The latter was actually quite optimistic about rain after his outstanding best time on Friday. That's not the case at the moment. Marc Marquez and Franco Morbidelli are the only Ducatis up front.
Once again, it's a VR46 rider who comes closest to Marquez. This time, Franco Morbidelli is only a tenth slower. Acost has also improved, and rain specialist Johann Zarco also makes his presence felt with fourth place. Marc Marquez, on the other hand, had to stop his bike at Turn 10.
He's been warming up for a few laps, but now Marc Marquez finally makes a comeback. He hammers out outstanding times in sectors two and three. In the end, he sets a clear fastest time. Pedro Acosta is now second, but over half a second slower.
Marc Marquez has now also intervened, but he's 'only' in second place. Jack Miller hasn't been able to break the dominant position yet. Fabio Quartararo is also doing well in third. Yamaha will likely be hoping for more rain this weekend.
We can probably throw the slick speculation in the trash, because it's started raining again. Unsurprisingly, Jack Miller is currently leading the field. The Australian is an ace in such mixed conditions. The Marquez brothers have just started racing.
Here we go. Of course, no one is daring to use slicks at the beginning. Thirty minutes of practice are now available. Let's see if we see any other tires towards the end. Moto2 rider Tony Arbolino, by the way, expects that to happen. However, he cautions against Turn 1 and the final sector.
We had expected it anyway, but now it's clear that Enea Bastianini will definitely not be competing this weekend. He's suffering from appendicitis. Tech3 left a back door open yesterday, but even then they described a start as very unlikely. That proved true today.
We now move on to the second free practice session of MotoGP . We already saw a dry line in some corners at the end of the Moto2 session. Could slicks even be used in the premier class this morning? FP2 starts at 10:10 a.m., followed directly by qualifying.
Tony Arbolino made significant progress at the end, putting almost a second between himself and his closest rival, rookie Dani Holgado. Behind him are Deniz Öncü and David Alonso. Diogo Moreira and Aron Canet improved significantly, taking fifth and sixth places, respectively. Dixon was relegated to 14th place at the end, as he was unable to continue driving.
Now it's Dixon's turn. Three drivers are faster. They're led by Tony Arbolino, who is considered a rain specialist. Barry Baltus and Albert Arenas were also faster.
He's been out of the running for a few minutes now, but Jake Dixon is still leading the timesheets. Albert Arenas just tried, but he lost by 34 thousandths. Looking at the World Championship contenders, Manuel Gonzalez makes the best impression in eighth place. Diogo Moreira is only 16th, and Aron Canet is only 24th. This is surprising, as Gonzalez has actually had the biggest problems in the wet so far.
This is very reminiscent of Veijer's earlier experience. Jake Dixon doesn't accelerate, but instead is thrown from his Boscoscuro in the waterfall. He's a bit dazed for a moment, but he seems largely okay. Whether his bike can be repaired in the remaining 15 minutes, however, is questionable.
He'll have to compete in Q1 this afternoon, but Jake Dixon is a force here on wet tires. Only Tony Arbolino and Deniz Öncü manage to keep the gap to the Brit under a second. The rest are significantly behind, even though this is the shortest lap of the year.
Unfortunately, the first crash of the day does occur in these difficult conditions. Collin Veijer is catapulted from his saddle in the waterfall. Amazingly, the Dutchman appears to have escaped completely unscathed, despite what was actually a heavy fall. He's lucky. Meanwhile, Jake Dixon sets the first best time.
The lights change and the Moto2 riders head out into the wet Saxon conditions. Since it's still not raining on the track, the times should get even closer to dry conditions.
Moto2 will also have 30 minutes to acclimatize to the conditions. Given the heavy cloud cover and low temperatures, it seems unlikely that it will be dry enough for slicks. Rain tires will likely remain fashionable, even if it's not raining at the moment.
Adrian Fernandez remains the fastest. Angel Piqueras tried again, but couldn't quite get the final sector together. The two were significantly faster than the rest of the field, which is led by Noah Dettwiler. He will be hoping for rain again for qualifying this afternoon; then he'll definitely be capable of springing an upset. The forecasts suggest so.
We've already said that Noah Dettwiler is usually in good form in the rain, and now he's underscoring that even more. He's moved up to third place. Only Fernandez and Piqueras are faster. Three minutes remain.
We seem to be slowly reaching the limits of these tires and conditions. The time for big leaps is over. Adrian Fernandez was once again a bit faster than Piqueras. He's now at 1:34.623. Noah Dettwiler is also doing well, finishing 12th. The Swiss has already proven several times that he's competitive in the rain.
Things are getting faster and faster. Angel Piqueras just found seven-tenths. We're already in the 1:34 range. And we have to commend the riders: There haven't been any crashes yet.
We started over 1:40 and are now up to Cormac Buchanan's 1:36.756. That puts us almost ten seconds behind the dry times. So, the conditions are pretty decent.
Moto3 kicks off this rain battle. The riders head out immediately to assess the situation. They now have 30 minutes to familiarize themselves with the conditions. There's not too much water on the track, but it's still far from suitable for slicks. Besides, it could start raining again at any time.

We were actually going to ask here whether there would be a rain battle. But there's no need, because it's already wet. And here over the Sachsenring , the next rain clouds are already hanging, even if it's no longer coming down from above. So, MotoGP is in for a treacherous day. Furthermore, Fabio di Giannantonio provided another whetstone yesterday. The Italian set an outstanding fastest time and is preparing to make life for Sachsenring king Marc Marquez a little more difficult than expected, at least for once. As always, we'll be accompanying you throughout the day with our live ticker. It starts at 8:40 a.m. with the second free practice session for Moto3.
