MotoGP - Argentina drops from MotoGP calendar: No race in 2026

For a long time, those in charge in Termas de Rio Hondo tried everything to ensure that MotoGP will be held again in 2026. But now it is certain: There will be no Argentine GP.

In 2014, MotoGP returned to Argentina after a 15-year hiatus. The event in Termas de Rio Hondo was a huge success from the start and became a fixture on the calendar. However, with President Javier Milei's rise to power, hosting the event became increasingly difficult, both financially and operationally. The 2024 Argentine GP had to be canceled at short notice, but it returned this year.

Futile efforts: No 2026 Argentine GP

Those in charge in Termas de Rio Hondo – the local promoter Grupo OSD and the government of the province of Santiago del Estero – have tried everything in recent months to ensure the 2026 event will take place. However, they have now had to throw in the towel. "It is with great regret that we must confirm that the MotoGP will not be held in Argentina in 2026, specifically at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit," the event's official channels announced Friday evening.

Intensive discussions with rights holder Dorna Sports have not led to a viable solution. "We would like to thank Dorna Sports for their time and willingness to explore various options," the statement reads.

Dorna regrets MotoGP exit in Argentina

Dorna itself also expressed its regret at the end of the Argentine Grand Prix in a statement: "We were proud to be part of this project and to witness the growth of the event and the positive impact of MotoGP in the region and the country. Thanks to all the fans who make the Grand Prix unforgettable every year. In addition to the government of the province of Santiago del Estero, thanks also go to the event promoter, GRUPO OSD, for all their work and efforts during this unforgettable chapter of the Argentine Grand Prix."

However, the organizers in Argentina aren't yet ready to talk about a final departure from the MotoGP racing calendar : "We hope to be able to return in 2027." Whether that will be possible, however, is questionable, as Argentina is set to have South American competition on the calendar. Dorna is planning a comeback in 2026 in Brazil at the Autodromo Internacional Ayrton Senna in Goiania.
