Formula 1 engine penalties 2025: The overview

(Motorsport-Total.com) - In Formula 1, the permitted engines have now been limited to just four power units. Individual elements of the power unit are sometimes even more restricted.
Drivers will have to manage their engine parts in 2025 Zoom
According to Article 28.2 of the Sporting Regulations, the following are permitted in 2025: four internal combustion engines (ICE), four MGU-Hs, four MGU-Ks, four turbochargers, two energy storage units, and two control electronics units. The exhaust system is also restricted. A total of eight of these are permitted in one season.
If a driver uses more engine parts than permitted, he faces a penalty on the starting grid according to Article 28.3: ten starting places for the first additional element, five starting places for each additional element.
If a driver receives a penalty of more than 15 starting places in an event, he must start from the very back.
Collecting engine parts is no longer possible: if two identical elements are exchanged at an event with a penalty, only the last used component may be used without penalty in the future.
Gearbox: No more limitsThere is one change regarding the gearbox, which will no longer be subject to restrictions in 2025. In previous years, drivers had to get through the season with five gearboxes, divided into outer and inner elements.
However, in February, the FIA World Council decided to completely delete Article 29, which regulates the use of gearboxes. The reason given was: "The reliability of current designs makes such a regulation obsolete."
This means drivers can now burn as many gears as they want.
