This affects two important motorways, the A4 and the A57, which play a central role for traffic in the region.
Specifically, the following connections will be blocked on Thursday, 14.08.2025 , Wednesday, 20.08.2025 , and Thursday, 21.08.2025 between 09:00 and 15:00 :
- from the A57 in the direction of Cologne to the A1 in the direction of Koblenz
- from the A1 in the direction of Koblenz to the A57 in the direction of Krefeld
This means that both the change from the A57 to the western A1 and the journey from the A1 to the northern A57 are not possible on these days.
On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the A4 motorway was already restricted in the direction of Olpe between the Cologne-South and Gremberg interchanges. Only two lanes were available there from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This measure also led to slow traffic, especially during rush hour.
The closed ramps at the Cologne-North interchange connect heavily trafficked sections of the highway. Even though the work is taking place outside of the morning rush hour, backups and slow traffic are to be expected. Commuters and long-distance truck drivers in particular should be prepared for delays.
For interregional traffic, the closure means that direct travel on the aforementioned routes is not possible. Instead, detours via other routes within Cologne's motorway network must be used. These are signposted but may result in longer travel times.
The Autobahn GmbH advises drivers to follow the diversion signs and change lanes early. Navigation devices with real-time traffic data can help identify traffic jams and choose alternative routes. Those with flexible schedules should avoid the periods between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to avoid being caught in the closures.
