20 points behind: Alpine the best worst of all time!

20 points behind: Alpine the best worst of all time!

(Motorsport-Total.com) - Formula 1 will definitely set a record in the 2025 season: This year will see the best worst of all time, because never before has a Formula 1 team in last place in the Constructors' World Championship scored as many points as this season - and we are only in the summer break.

No other team in Formula 1 has ever scored as many points as Alpine Zoom Download

Alpine has already earned 20 points, but still remains far behind in last place, as Haas, in ninth place, already has 35 points. This means that Alpine could remain at the bottom of the table despite a good points tally of currently more than one point per Grand Prix.

The previous record was held by Haas in the 2023 season, in which Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen scored a combined twelve points - four fewer than Alfa Romeo at the time.

Alpine is a one-man team in terms of points this year, as all the points were scored by Pierre Gasly. Neither Jack Doohan nor Franco Colapinto in the second car were able to contribute a single point.

Gasly scored six points in Bahrain (7th), one in Miami (8th in the sprint), four in Spain (8th), eight in Great Britain (6th) and one in Belgium (10th).

As always, the changing points system distorts the statistics. While Alpine is the best-placed team in Formula 1 history in terms of absolute points, if one were to use a percentage value, the French team would currently share first place.

With 20 points, they currently have 80 percent of a Formula 1 victory on their account – exactly the same value as Toro Rosso in 2009. Red Bull's junior team scored eight points in 2009 with Sebastien Buemi, Sebastien Bourdais, and Jaime Alguersuari – but back then, they only awarded ten points for a win.

McLaren and Honda are entering a new era with high hopes, aiming to build on the successful times of Senna and Prost. Third place on this list would be the Minardi team, which had earned seven points (70 percent of a win) in 2005. But that was, of course, only due to the scandalous race in Indianapolis, in which only Ferrari, Jordan, and Minardi were competing, which also guaranteed Minardi the seven points without a retirement.

Of course, Formula 1 history also has its fair share of loopholes. More than once, a team has been excluded from the Formula 1 standings, such as Tyrrell in 1984 or McLaren in 2007. With 166 points, McLaren would be a strong contender for the title of best-worst – but someone who's excluded can't be ranked last...

By the way: The first time a bottom-placed team didn't have zero points was in the 2002 Formula 1 season. Back then, Heinz-Harald Frentzen secured two points for the Arrows team.
