1,400 hp in qualifying - this legendary Zakspeed is now available for purchase

(Motorsport-Total.com) - The German team Zakspeed has scored points only once in five years in Formula 1. Now, the car with which it achieved this special result in 1987 – in the first race with the new chassis – is up for sale. (Photo gallery: The Zakspeed story in Formula 1!)
The setting for Zakspeed's points-scoring victory was the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. Martin Brundle – later Michael Schumacher's teammate at Benetton and now a TV pundit on English television – finished fifth from 16th on the grid.
The Zakspeed 871 chassis used at the time is now listed in an online marketplace for 387,000 euros.
Details about the offered Zakspeed carThe listing on GT-Parts.com states: "The car was restored many years ago [and] was once used at Hockenheim and shown for exhibition purposes. The engine and transmission have been overhauled." The sale is being made "on behalf of a customer from a private collection."
In addition to the roadworthy car, the offer also includes various spare parts such as an additional engine, four wheels and a set of tire heating pads.
In the spring, a Zakspeed 841 was doing laps at Imola, still in a transitional design. But by this time, one thing was already clear: the motorsport team from Niederzissen near the Nürburgring wanted to enter Formula 1, and that by 1985. Photo gallery
The Zakspeed 871 was powered by a 1.5-liter turbo engine developed and built by Zakspeed in 1987, making it one of only a few Formula 1 teams to have their own engine, alongside Ferrari and Renault.
The 1500/4 1.5 L4 t engine – an inline four-cylinder – produced up to 1,400 hp in qualifying and around 830 hp in the Grand Prix, according to the offer.
Further successes failed to materialize for ZakspeedBut after the race in Imola, Zakspeed was no longer able to finish a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the points.
Twice – in Monaco and in Australia – the Niederzissen-based racing team narrowly missed out on further World Championship points at the 1987 Nürburgring with Brundle and Christian Danner finishing seventh. From 1988 onwards, twelfth place was their best result.
In its fifth and final Formula 1 season in 1989, Zakspeed – then with Yamaha engines – was mostly lagging behind. The team only failed to qualify twice: future DTM champion Bernd Schneider made it into the field in Brazil and Japan, but retired early in the races.
