Mahomes and Chiefs Remain Undefeated, Defeat 49ers 28-18 in Super Bowl Rematch

Chiefs Stay Undefeated with 28-18 Victory Over 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Patrick Mahomes navigated through two interceptions to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a 28-18 victory against the San Francisco 49ers, keeping the Chiefs as the only undefeated team in the league. This encounter marked a rematch of the Super Bowl held eight months prior, where the Chiefs secured a title with a 25-22 overtime win.

This game, unlike the Super Bowl, saw a drop in excitement levels, but Kansas City managed to maintain their dominance over San Francisco, winning their fifth consecutive matchup, including two Super Bowls. A significant concern for the 49ers arose when star receiver Brandon Aiyuk was carted off the field with a right knee injury late in the first half, adjusting the dynamics of the game.

In a pivotal moment late in the third quarter, a miscue between backup receiver Ronnie Bell and quarterback Brock Purdy led to an interception that Kansas City turned into a touchdown, highlighted by a 33-yard scramble from Mahomes—his longest regular-season run ever. Mahomes later added a rushing touchdown, marking significant play in a game featuring four rushing touchdowns from the Chiefs, including two from Kareem Hunt and an icing 18-yarder from Mecole Hardman.

Mahomes completed 16 of 27 passes for 154 yards, bringing his season totals to six passing touchdowns and eight interceptions. Purdy struggled, throwing for 212 yards, two rushing touchdowns, but three interceptions, with one crucial pick occurring in the end zone as San Francisco attempted to stage a comeback.

In the second half, the 49ers were missing their top three receivers, navigating challenges as they prepared to face the Dallas Cowboys next week, while the Chiefs will visit Las Vegas.
