LANDOVER, Md. -- Jayden Daniels, the Washington Commanders' rookie quarterback, sustained a rib injury that led to his early exit from the game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Commanders announced he would not return in the second half while leading 27-0.
Daniels was seen on the sidelines at halftime dressed in sweatpants and a hoodie, without his helmet. His mother, Regina Jackson, reassured fans via social media that “he's fine,” while part-owner Magic Johnson expressed his hopes for Daniels’ quick recovery.
Despite rushing for 46 yards on the team’s first play, Daniels took several hits, including a significant tumble, during the opening drive. His injury occurred earlier in the game, potentially during a third-down completion leading to a field goal, after which he appeared to be in pain.
Daniels initially returned to the bench but later went into the medical tent for evaluation. Following Andy Dalton's interception, he briefly returned to throw some passes before showing frustration by slamming his helmet on the ground and returning to the medical tent.
Ultimately, he walked off the field and did not return, paving the way for veteran Marcus Mariota, who subsequently led a scoring drive that further extended the lead.
Coming into this game, Daniels was a frontrunner for the Offensive Rookie of the Year, boasting 1,404 passing yards, 322 rushing yards, and 10 total touchdowns in his first six games.
