Scotty Kilmer reveals popular used car that 'can cost a fortune to fix' despite low cost

Top car mechanic Scotty Kilmer has revealed one of the UK's most popular cars can "cost a fortune" to fix in a potential blow to owners. The leading motoring expert claimed Volkswagen cars were full of "all kinds of plastics", which can be prone to breaking.
He also took aim at the brand's "automatic transmission" as he issued a heated rant against the German marque. Volkswegen’s are among the most purchased models in the UK with thousands of brand-new Golf models sold last year. The comments are Scotty’s own personal opinion on the brand having spent decades working in the automotive industry in the United States. In one video, Scotty takes a look at a fifth-generation Volkswagen Golf, claiming they were not built as well as some competitors.
Speaking on YouTube, Scotty said: "If you've watched me for any great length of time, you'd have noticed that I'm not a big fan of Volkswagen, and here's why.
"The quality isn't job number one with Volkswagen. They're full of all kinds of plastic that breaks all the time and can cost a fortune to fix."
Later in the video, Scotty claimed the automatic gearboxes fitted to Volkswagens of this era could be problematic, which is a particular issue in America, where the mechanic lives.
He added: "Plus, their automatic transmissions stink, they break a lot and they cost a fortune to fix. This one is a standard [manual], so we don't have to worry about that. But 96% of Americans drive automatic transmissions."
Some YouTube viewers were quick to agree with Scotty with some road users also reporting issues with their models.
@bionyx6368 posted: "I used to like VW until I discovered mine had a leaking radiator and water inlet housing.”
Another viewer added: "I never liked VW products either. I don't get what [people], see in that brand. I's my least liked German car.”
However, many motorists questioned Scotty’s assessments with several insisting they were more than happy with their Volkswagen models.
@SuperNovaHeights_ said: "Americans must get different VW’s than us Europeans cos build quality is never really a problem with VW’s over here. Plus they’re great cars."
@LaowaiTaipei added: "I drive a 2022 Jetta. So far so good. 22K miles, no problems yet. Great gas mileage- 50+ MPG on the highway."
Motoring experts at KSB Autostyling have previously stressed the brand’s specialist parts could hike up costs but insisted the brand was not overly expensive.
They said: "While the initial cost may be higher than some alternatives, the brand’s commitment to quality and performance often justifies the investment for many buyers.
"Routine maintenance costs align with industry standards, but specialised parts and labour can contribute to slightly higher expenses."
