Older drivers over the age of 70 “won’t legally be allowed to drive” due to one simple DVLA rule, according to specialists. Experts at Age UK said drivers who forget to renew their driving licence won’t be allowed on the roads - despite years of experience behind the wheel.

Individuals have to renew their licence on their 70th birthday and then once every three years after the milestone. This is a legal requirement, and anyone forgetting the policy and not updating their photocard will be penalised if caught out. These motorists will have no valid driving licence, which will also see their car insurance policy invalidated in a major blow in the event of an accident.

Age UK said: “The DVLA should send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday. Don’t forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them.

"There might be extra costs for these but if you don’t apply for these extra categories you’ll only be able to drive a car in future.

“If your licence expires and you don't apply for a new one, you won't legally be allowed to drive.”

Motorists can renew their driving licence at 70 online, with road users not charged a penny. Rules state individuals who are set to turn 70 in the next 90 days can also renew online, which could take the stress away from a birthday.

Motorists can also apply for their licence renewal by post using the D46P application form sent out to drivers by the DVLA. Meanwhile, individuals will also be able to fill out the D1 application for a driving licence form.

According to the Government, new driving licence photocards should arrive within three weeks, although this may take longer if any medical or personal details need to be checked.

Age UK added: "It can take up to 3 weeks to renew your licence if you apply by post, so you might prefer to renew online instead. Register on GOV.UK and follow step-by-step instructions on how to renew."
