Motorists are being urged to exercise additional caution when passing cyclists on the road. The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) issued the alert via social media, emphasising the importance of considering cyclist safety.

More than 100 cyclists lose their lives on Britain's roads annually, according to road safety charity Brake. In total, cyclist fatalities represent approximately 6% of all road deaths each year.

Additionally, the bulk of cyclist deaths occur on roads where a 30mph speed restriction is enforced. Nevertheless, adhering to certain fundamental safety guidelines outlined in the Highway Code could substantially reduce the likelihood of a collision between a vehicle and cyclist.

Posting on X, the DVSA stated: "When overtaking cyclists, give them as much room as you would when overtaking a car Leave at least 1.5m when overtaking at speeds of up to 30mph and give them more space if you're driving at higher speeds, at night or in bad weather."

Likewise, rules 162 to 169 of the Highway Code emphasise that motorists should always verify the road ahead is clear and that there is an appropriate gap to overtake.

It also underscores that drivers should only attempt an overtake when it is safe and legal to do so. Rule 163 of the Highway Code emphasises that motorists should:

  • Use mirrors and signal when safe to do so
  • Take a quick sideways glance if necessary into the blind spot area before starting to move out
  • Take extra care at night and in poor visibility
  • Be aware that cyclists may pass slower-moving or stationary traffic on both sides and may be easy to miss
  • Leave at least 1.5 metre at speeds of up to 30mph when overtaking

Moreover, rule 212 of the Highway Code emphasises that cyclists should be treated the same as cars when it comes to overtaking and that even more care should be taken during adverse weather, especially high winds. This is because it could result in unpredictable behaviour from the cyclist, such as swerving out in front of you or suddenly losing control.

Road conditions can also impact the safety of cyclists and overtaking manoeuvres. Rule 213 of the Highway Code states: "Motorcyclists, cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles may suddenly need to avoid uneven road surfaces and obstacles such as drain covers or oily, wet or icy patches on the road. Give them plenty of room and pay particular attention to any sudden change of direction they may have to make."

Further details on how motorists should safely overtake can be found in the Highway Code here.
