The UK’s cheapest supermarket fuel has been revealed with costs varying between all the major retailers. Analysis from RAC Fuel Watch has studied the petrol and diesel prices at the top four supermarket fuel brands, with prices at Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco analysed.

The research found that Asda was the cheapest offer in the UK, with motorists paying around 0.5p less than rival brands. RAC Fuel Watch data found that Asda’s UK average Unleaded petrol price was 130.8p per litre. Meanwhile, diesel costs were also the cheapest with road users paying an average of just 138.4p per litre to top up their tanks.

Morrisons was the second most affordable with petrol prices at an average of 131p per litre, with diesel at 138.8 pence. Tesco was third across both fuel types, with Unleaded petrol costs standing at 131.4 pence per litre and diesel recorded at 138.9p.

Sainsbury's came through as the most expensive of the four popular chains, with motorists paying on average 131.6p per litre for petrol and 139p per litre for diesel. Consumer watchdog Which? has admitted that supermarket petrol can "often be cheaper than other forecourts".

They stressed that “opting for cheaper supermarket unleaded” was a simple and convenient way to save money every time road users fill up their cars.

Which? explained: “All standard unleaded fuel sold in the UK conforms to the same British Standards, so you shouldn’t consider supermarket fuel to be below par.

“The key differences between fuels will come when you compare standard and premium (often referred to as 'super') fuel grades. But keep in mind that even supermarkets have their own premium fuel (such as Tesco Momentum 99) that offer similar claimed benefits to the premium fuels from other brands.”

RAC Fuel Watch data shows that average petrol and diesel fees are on the up with an increase since the summer. Unleaded petrol costs now stand at an average of 135.03p per litre, up from the 132.21p recorded earlier this summer in June.

Diesel costs have also risen by up to 8p per litre, with prices up from 134.17 pence in June to 142.92p per litre in September.
