Brits urged to follow one tip to get over £30,000 off price of a new car

A motoring expert has urged all drivers thinking about buying a new car to follow one tip beforehand which could help them to save as much as £30,000 off its usual price. Jim Starling runs the YouTube channel Definitely Not a Guru, creating videos in which he shares a number of ways to help drivers save money on new and used cars.

In a recent video, Jim recommends all new car buyers to check vehicle retail platforms for discounts offered by specific dealers, showing two Vauxhall Mokkas for around £9,000 under the list price. He explained: "The Vauxhall Mokka 1.2 Turbo Design Automatic. This car has a list price of £28,390, but this one has £8,395 knocked off it, so you can drive it away today for under £20,000. They say this is a car that will depreciate when you buy it new, and it won't help if you buy a new one without that discount. You can also get the all-electric version of the Mokka for £20,500 - that's got nearly £9,000 knocked off it. So, if you like the Mokka but you'd prefer to get the electric one, here's one with 212 miles of range and can get from 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds."

Whilst all new cars will be given a standard list price by their manufacturer, dealers will typically offer a discounted rate on specific examples in order to make them more desirable to potential customers.

This is often the case for less popular models that new car buyers commonly overlook or the final examples of a vehicle that has recently been replaced, with dealerships needing to clear their stock.

As a result, in addition to visiting their nearby dealership, drivers should look up the model they are interested in buying on websites such as Auto Trader, Carwow and cinch to find discounts.

Later in the video, Jim noted that new car buyers can find a number of family models with discounts of more than £10,000, showing an attractive Cupra Formentor hatchback with £11,000 off.

He continued: "A Cupra Formentor 1.5 Automatic which is meant to be £39,470 but is now down to £28,490 - £11,000 off that car, and it's a brilliant car. I think they look absolutely magnificent as well.

"There are so many bland, boring cars about at the moment, but I really like the look of this. I think Cupra is the brand that doesn't take itself quite as serious as others in the Volkswagen Group at the moment, and this is a brilliant bit of kit."

However, one of the biggest discounts Jim shared was a Maxus pickup truck which was advertised with £30,000 off - noting that the discount alone makes it an attractive purchase.

He added: "Here we go, this is a massive discount. This is the Maxus T90EV, it's an electric pickup truck. I've not driven one, but by all accounts, they're not too good. But, whilst it should be £54,260, you can get a brand new one for £24,000.

"That's £30,000 knocked off the price! Having not driven one, I can't tell you if that discount suddenly makes it better, but I'd say that a bang average car that costs £50,000 won't get anywhere near as good a review as a £25,000 car that is bang average. It might be worth a test drive, because it's an amazing discount."
