Over the past two decades, electric cars have surged in popularity, as increasing numbers of motorists opt to abandon their petrol and diesel cars.

While electric cars were overlooked during the early era of motoring, they have become a formidable presence in the 2020s, as manufacturers have increasingly adopted them for environmental considerations.

Currently, virtually every brand produces at least one electric vehicle, or alternatively, manufactures at least one model featuring hybrid technology.

With this in mind, automotive reviewers at AutoExpress have assembled a list of the 10 finest electric cars available in the UK, before reaching a conclusion on which represents the best purchase.

Despite fierce rivalry from the likes of Fiat, Renault, Kia, and Tesla, it was the Czech manufacturer Skoda that emerged victorious with their Elroq SUV.

Explaining why the vehicle had triumphed, the testers at AutoExpress revealed that Skoda had executed such an outstanding job with the model, they had declared it their "overall Car of the Year at the 2025 New Car Awards".

They said: "A sophisticated cabin, a claimed range of up to 360 miles, quick charging speeds of up to 175kW and competitive pricing from less than £32,000 make the Elroq our favourite electric vehicle on sale.

"It's a top choice for young families. On the road, the Elroq feels substantial but not unwieldy, has a mature ride that doesn't fall apart in corners, and it's very easy to control the throttle."

The Skoda Elroq has once again impressed the critics at the publication, following its earlier selection as their car of the year.

They stated: "In the end, however, we chose the car which, try as we might, we struggled to find any obvious faults with – and that all-round strength sealed its position.

"Everything we've come to expect and love from a Skoda is right here, with value for money at the forefront of everything it does."

Other vehicles that nearly dethroned the Skoda included a trio from European manufacturers Renault and Fiat, with the Renaults 5 and 4 coming in second and fourth, and the Fiat Grande Panda a strong third.

Indeed, the Fiat Grande Panda, available in both hybrid and electric versions, was crowned the winner in the small car category.

Commenting on its electric model, the reviewers noted: "It's simple, durable, and affordable. Our tests have shown it to be very efficient at slow speeds and in town, and we saw a real-world range of around 145 miles on a route that was evenly split between urban, country roads, and motorways."
