It will be completely banned in cars! It will come into effect in 2027

Automotive regulators in China plan to ban fully concealed door handles, particularly those used in electric vehicles, due to safety risks and functional issues. The new regulation is expected to take effect in July 2027, with manufacturers given a one-year transition period.

According to the draft regulation, semi-concealed and traditional door handles can continue to be used, but these models will require a mechanical backup. Furthermore, safety criteria for automatically opening doors in extraordinary situations, such as accidents, will be added to the standards.

It is stated that the advantages of hidden door handles, which stand out with their aesthetic appearance and aerodynamic contributions, are quite limited.

FAILED THE TESTS

Electronic door handles, in particular, are not only costly but also have a high failure rate and can fail in situations like power outages, cold weather, or fire. In crash tests, the unlocking rate for electronic handles remains at 67 percent, while for mechanical handles, this rate rises to 98 percent.

Some manufacturers prefer semi-concealed door handles for safety reasons. Volkswagen, for example, has made this design standard, while FAW-Audi's new models feature mechanical systems that activate in the event of a collision.
