Attention those with touch-sensitive cars! A new era is beginning for automobiles

Euro NCAP is making significant changes to its vehicle safety standards. The agency, taking action against the excessive use of touchscreens that distract drivers, has announced that starting in 2026, it will no longer award five-star ratings to vehicles that manage basic driving functions solely via the screen.
IMPLEMENTATION WILL START IN 2026According to the new rule, from 2026 onwards, vehicles will not receive the highest safety rating in Euro NCAP tests if fog lights, turn signals, hazard warning lights and wipers are controlled solely via the touchscreen.
The criteria will become even stricter after 2029. Points will be deducted if frequently used functions, such as climate control and volume adjustments, are solely dependent on the screen.
INCREASES ACCIDENTS AND DISTRACTS ATTENTIONEuro NCAP's decision was also influenced by research findings. While one in four accidents occurs due to distraction in the car, tests have shown that using the Apple CarPlay menu is five times more distracting than driving under the influence of alcohol. Touchscreen use is even more dangerous than texting.
Return to physical keys will accelerateWhile this decision isn't a regulation, the return to physical buttons is expected to accelerate as manufacturers prioritize achieving a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Some brands, such as Mercedes, are also known to be working on AI-powered voice control systems, aiming to reduce menu clutter and reduce driver distraction.
CRITERIA DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE EU AND THE USAWhile the issue has been brought before the European Parliament, no legal obligation has yet been introduced. While it has been stated that US NCAP criteria in the US should be compatible with Euro NCAP, it is anticipated that the US may be more flexible, particularly due to the influence of brands like Tesla.
