News to the Minute

At a time when more and more battery electric vehicle (BEV) options are proliferating, Honda Australia understands that this type of propulsion will be a help , and not necessarily the goal.

President and CEO Jay Joseph said in statements quoted by the Drive website: " BEVs are not the goal , better electric vehicles are one path to achieving carbon neutrality , not necessarily the only one."

The leader emphasized that the goal is to achieve carbon neutrality and no battery-powered electric vehicles - although he does not deny that these continue to improve.

For Jay Joseph, in the medium term, the path may be fully electric cars, but in the future, "other technologies" will be developed to achieve pollutant emissions targets.

On the other hand, Honda Australia's General Manager of Automotive, Robert Thorp, noted that hybrids are the most popular cars, while demand for all-electric vehicles is stagnant and combustion engines are declining.

Solutions such as synthetic fuels or hydrogen are possible future paths, but they are still relatively expensive technologies. Honda's electrified lineup consists of hybrids, but there are also electric models—notably the e:Ny1 SUV , with a range of up to 412 km (254 miles) on the WLTP cycle.
