Are Seniors Worse Drivers? Clear Report Finds

Does age always correlate with driving experience? Data from the report "Road Accidents in Poland in 2024," published by the National Police Headquarters, shows that the situation is more complex than it might seem.
Seniors, i.e. people over 60 , are more likely to be involved in road accidents, and in many categories (especially pedestrians and cyclists), they are particularly vulnerable to tragic consequences.
On the other hand, their share of perpetrators is not always as high as stereotypically assumed. Statistics allow us to look at the problem with greater precision, debunking some myths while also highlighting the real risks associated with age and road safety.
Seniors as Drivers: The Numbers Don't LieIn 2024, drivers aged 60 and over caused 3,866 road accidents , representing nearly 19.7% of all accidents involving drivers. As a result, 339 people lost their lives (20.8% of victims in this category) and over 4,300 were injured. By comparison, the previous year saw 3,571 such accidents.

Importantly, the accident rate per 10,000 people in this age group was 3.89 – this is lower than among young drivers , but the consequences of the accidents are much more serious.
Victims among people 60+Seniors are more likely to be victims of accidents than younger age groups. In 2024, 611 fatalities were recorded in this age category, representing 32.2% of all road fatalities in Poland. 5,472 people were injured. This means that one in three road accident fatalities was a person over 60.
Data shows that elderly people suffer the most in confrontations with vehicles or other road users.
Pedestrians and cyclists. A special risk group. The most alarming statistics concern seniors as pedestrians and cyclists . In 2024, people aged 60+ accounted for a staggering 51.9% of all pedestrian fatalities – 222 people. 1,589 were injured, over 36% of all pedestrian injuries.

The data for cyclists is equally disturbing: people aged 60+ were responsible for nearly 25% of accidents caused by cyclists, and among fatalities in the same category, they accounted for 58%. This shows that age significantly increases the risk of serious consequences in a collision with a vehicle.
Seniors on Motorcycles: Smaller Scale, Big RiskAlthough motorcyclists aged 60+ constitute a relatively small group of road users, there is also some noteworthy data . In 2024, they caused 61 accidents, resulting in 11 deaths and 55 injuries.
Considering the small number of older motorcyclists, this figure is high and shows that age and slower reflexes can have a significant impact on motorcycle operation.
What does the data say?A police report shows that seniors don't dominate accident statistics , but they are often involved in the most tragic incidents, particularly as pedestrians and cyclists. The problem isn't just the number of accidents, but their consequences: more serious injuries and higher mortality rates.

Therefore, when discussing road safety , it is worth paying attention not only to seniors as drivers, but also as victims for whom even a minor accident can end tragically.
