How to charge an electric car battery during a blackout

How to charge an electric car battery during a blackout

In the midst of the transition to electromobility, more and more electrified vehicles are circulating on our roads. For users of plug-in hybrid cars, the blackout that has occurred throughout the Iberian Peninsula is not a major problem, because when their battery runs out, they can continue operating with the internal combustion engine powered by fuel from the gas tank. The situation is different for electric vehicles, since if they run out of power, they have no alternative to recharge, at least not in conventional charging infrastructure. And this is a real problem if it happens during the journey; hence, it is always advisable to travel with the greatest possible range.

If a driver runs out of battery while traveling, they can call roadside assistance. Some companies offer solutions such as charging on-site using a portable charger or towing the vehicle. Some charging stations are solar-powered or have battery backup systems, so they may not have lost power during a blackout or power outage.

The Lasser Group, specialists in installation, repair, and maintenance services, explains the alternatives available for charging vehicles using alternative energy sources. However, these solutions will depend on the user's resources and foresight.

Solar panels with battery storage systems

Photovoltaic solar panels are an alternative, although they automatically shut down in the event of a power outage to prevent the generated electricity from flowing back into the grid and endangering workers attempting to repair the line. However, if batteries are included, the stored energy can still be used to power homes or recharge cars during a power outage. They can do so if they have sufficient capacity to cover demand until the power supply is restored.

Grupo Lasser also explains that electric generators can be an option for providing temporary power to an electric car. “It's important to ensure the generator has the capacity to supply the necessary power to charge your vehicle. Furthermore, before starting to charge the car, it's essential to be in a location with a certain level of ventilation to prevent the buildup of harmful gases,” the company notes.

External batteries

Another option is external batteries, although most allow for partial charging. They're similar to the power banks used to charge your phone, but they're larger, about the size of a carry-on suitcase. These types of chargers don't require an external outlet to power the car, although they have more limited functionality. In some cases, their capacity doesn't exceed 4 or 5 kWh and they offer a range of about 30 kilometers, perhaps enough to get home or to your destination.
