Therefore, drivers of these sustainable vehicles must be familiar with the traffic regulations issued by the Directorate General of Traffic , but sometimes questions arise and conflicting situations arise. One of these concerns the situation in which a cyclist rides on the road when there is a bike lane on the road.
Is it legal to drive on the road in this situation?The answer is yes, the General Traffic Regulations do not contain any rule that indicates otherwise, therefore, a cyclist has every right to ride on the road when there is an adjacent bike lane , unless there is a sign indicating that bicycles are prohibited from riding, as @frankyriderbike points out on TikTok.
On the other hand, the RGC does specify in its article 64 that "bicycle riders have priority over motor vehicles when traveling on a properly marked bicycle lane, bicycle crossing, or shoulder."
The General Traffic Regulations specify in Article 118 that "bicycle riders and, where applicable, occupants shall be required to wear approved or certified protective helmets in accordance with current legislation when riding on interurban roads, except on long uphill slopes, or for medical reasons certified as established in Article 119.3, or in extreme heat conditions."
On the other hand, in the case of minors under 16 years of age , the use of this protective element will be mandatory in all cases, that is, even if they travel on urban roads , as stipulated in the General Driving Regulations.
