Tesla Launches Robotaxi Service in Austin, Texas

ROME – Tesla has launched a robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The launch comes shortly after Musk decided to return to focusing on his business ventures after his controversial stint in the Trump Administration. The model chosen for the service’s debut is the Model Y SUV. The Cybercab, initially indicated as the most suitable vehicle, is in fact still in development and will not hit the market before 2026.

Tesla saw profits plunge 71% in the first quarter due to weak sales in several markets. A trend that Musk is now aiming to reverse. By choosing Austin to launch the robotaxis, the billionaire has deliberately chosen a U.S. state known for its pro-business approach to regulation. But he could then expand into the now politically “enemy” California.
Musk had initially planned a June 12 launch, before backtracking, saying he was “super paranoid” about safety. “We want to take it slow, deliberately,” Musk said in a May 20 interview with CNBC, telling the broadcaster that Tesla would likely run only 10 autonomous vehicles in the first week. That number will rise to about 1,000 “within a few months. And then we’ll expand to other cities… San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Antonio,” he said.
