Six-seater Tesla Model Y and Model 3+ arrive in China

Competition in China is biting and so Tesla has decided to update its most successful model , the Tesla Model Y. This autumn, the new, longer, six-seater version of the Model Y will arrive in the Land of the Dragon. The news emerged from the documentation filed by Tesla with the MIIT, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which reveals in detail the technical and dimensional specifications of the new model.
This is the first three-row version of the Model Y , designed to offer greater versatility to large families or those looking for an electric car with more space. Compared to the traditional Model Y, the new “L” variant grows in all directions . The length reaches 497 cm (almost 18 cm more), while the height increases to 166 cm (+4.4 cm). The wheelbase, a key element for interior space, reaches 304 cm, 15 cm more than the five-seater version. The weight also increases, going from 1,992 to 2,088 kg. With these measurements, the Model YL enters directly into the “large” electric family car segment and presents itself as an alternative to models such as the BYD Tang L.
The Model YL's technical specifications include dual electric motors: a 142 kW (200 kW) front motor and a 198 kW (200 kW) rear motor, for a combined output of 456 hp (340 kW), slightly more than the 451 hp (331 kW) of the five-seat AWD Long Range version. The NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries are supplied by LG and should provide a range similar to that of the current Model Y Long Range (up to 533 km (339 mi) on the CLTC cycle). The top speed is limited to 201 km/h (125 mph).
An interesting detail is the new Model Y/// logo on the car's tailgate. The launch of the Model YL comes at a time of declining sales for Tesla in China: in the first six months of 2025, the Model Y recorded a 17.5% decline compared to the previous year, with 171,491 units sold. The decline was driven by growing competition from local brands such as Xpeng, Zeekr, and Xiaomi. The Model Y remains Elon Musk's best-selling model in the country, with over 480,000 units sold in 2024, accounting for 74.6% of the total. The estimated price of the new version is around 300,000 yuan (about $41,800), in line with its main local competitors.
Another new product that Tesla will announce in the coming weeks is the new Model 3+ . Also revealed in documents from the Chinese auto regulatory authority, the Model 3+ features rear-wheel drive combined with a more powerful battery with NMC chemistry produced by LG . Since the energy consumption of the RWD version is lower than the AWD version (11.2 kWh/100 km versus 12.1 kWh), the new LG battery could lead to a range of more than 800 km . It will arrive in September with a base price of 270,000 yuan (about $37,600).
