Imparato: 'EU transition targets unattainable'

"The targets set by Europe for the automotive sector for 2030 and 2035 are no longer achievable unless we assume we're facing a market collapse of around 30% or the financial collapse of all European manufacturers. We therefore strongly welcome the strategic discussion on the evolution of regulations in Europe; it's an important discussion," said Jean-Philippe Imparato, Head of Europe at Stellantis, during a roundtable discussion at the IAA Mobility 2025, the Munich Motor Show. "We have issued warnings, we have discussed, we have constructed and put forward carefully considered proposals with our colleagues and with the authorities in Brussels. I think, and we believe, that now is the time to act, and to act quickly, if possible before the end of the year," Imparato said. According to the manager, work must be done to renew the vehicle fleet: "Today, 256 million cars are on the road in Europe, and 150 million of them are more than 10 years old. Therefore, instead of focusing solely on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the new car market, we must focus on renewing the vehicle fleet," he said. Regarding the light commercial vehicle market, Imparato explained that "the way this sector is viewed in terms of regulation and development between 2030 and 2035 is absolutely lethal. Light commercial vehicles, in many cases, are absolutely crucial to B2B business and the profitability of companies, especially traditional ones."

Imparato, 'with the new plan no longer 100% electric'

"Much of the content of the Dare Forward plan is still valid, mature, and can be confirmed. Some will likely change. 100% electrification by 2030 is no longer achievable, for obvious reasons related to market evolution," said Jean-Philippe Imparato, Head of Europe at Stellantis, at the Monaco Motor Show. "We began discussing Dare Forward with CEO Filosa last week. I'm sure Filosa will also provide updates on the vision because we need him to present us with a vision of what Stellantis could be in five years, probably ten years," he added. "We've put everything on the table. We've started the work flow that will lead us to present the evolution of the plan to you in the first quarter of 2026. We'll consider each of the points of Dare Forward one by one and present the evolution of the plan to you," Imparato explained.
