Changan Deepal S05: This Is What Europe's Second Electric SUV Looks Like

Changan is unveiling its second model for Europe at the IAA Mobility Show, which runs until September 14. Called the Deepal S05, it's a fully electric C-SUV equipped with a 68.8 kWh high-voltage lithium-iron phosphate battery that can be charged at a fast-charging station with up to 200 kW of power, allowing for a range of up to 485 kilometers.

With roots in the Turin Design Centre and the Birmingham Research and Development Centre, the Deepal S05 is the second model for Europe after the Deepal S07 D-SUV and stands out for its compact dimensions: 4,598 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,600 mm high.

The styling is characterized by clean lines, flared wheel arches, and a sporty, dynamic silhouette that underscores the European character of the five-door C-SUV at first glance. Frameless windows and electric, flush door handles give the new model a luxurious look and outstanding aerodynamics.

With a drag coefficient of just 0.25, the Deepal S05 sets new standards in terms of efficiency and range. A distinctive feature of the new Chinese model is the active front grille, which closes at high speeds, further contributing to the aerodynamics and efficiency of the Deepal S05.

Dimensions and on-board technologies

The wheelbase length of 2,880 millimetres offers generous legroom, and depending on the version, a 1.9-square-metre panoramic glass roof enhances the feeling of spaciousness.

At the heart of the modern, ergonomic interior is a 15.4-inch touchscreen with voice control, which can be tilted 15 degrees toward the driver or front passenger to reduce glare.

Depending on the equipment package, the Deepal S05 also offers a heads-up display with augmented reality technology for online navigation. Updates can be made over-the-air to keep the Qualcomm processor up to date.

The use of vegan leather on the steering wheel and seats underlines how the Deepal S05 combines luxury and sustainability.

The luggage compartment offers a capacity ranging from 492 to 1,250 litres, while the front compartment has a capacity of up to 159 litres and is ideal for hand luggage or charging cables.

The electric motor on the rear axle delivers a maximum power of 200 kW and a torque of 290 Nm, providing rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

In the AWD variant, an asynchronous electric motor on the front axle adds 120 kW of power and 212 Nm of maximum torque, improving driving pleasure and performance.

Both variants are powered by a 68.8 kWh high-voltage lithium-iron phosphate battery.

Furthermore, the standard heat pump and pulsed battery heating significantly improve daily range: the RWD variant consumes 15.9 kWh per 100 kilometers (WLTP), offering a range of up to 485 kilometers on a single charge. The AWD variant, on the other hand, consumes 17.5 kWh per 100 kilometers, achieving a maximum range of 445 kilometers.

At a direct current (DC) fast charging station, the Deepal S05 can charge at up to 200 kW, minimizing charging times. In just 15 minutes, the battery capacity increases from 30 to 80 percent. At an alternating current (AC) charging station, charging is possible at up to 11 kW. With the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, the C-SUV can power external devices with up to 6 kW, demonstrating exceptional flexibility.

Regardless of the equipment package chosen, the Deepal S05 comes standard with 17 intelligent and future-proof driver assistance systems, enabling Level 2 autonomous driving. The body is optimised for optimum crash performance, making it a particularly safe everyday companion.
