Gasoline will be cheaper this weekend at this major brand's gas stations

A major retailer will be renewing its "fuel at cost price" operation on September 5 and 6.

Many French people are paying particular attention to their spending after the summer holidays. Luckily, a major retailer has decided to organize a new fuel sale at cost price for the first weekend of September. A week after Leclerc, Intermarché is taking over, offering motorists the chance to fill up for a few cents less on Friday, September 5th and Saturday, September 6th.

The major retailer had already lowered pump prices in early July for the first major holiday weekend. At the hundreds of gas stations participating in the initiative, you'll be able to pay about two cents less than usual for a liter of unleaded or diesel. It's not much, but it's worth remembering that the margins made on gasoline prices by retailers like Intermarché, Auchan, Leclerc, and Carrefour are very low.

To save one euro, you'll need to put about 50 liters in your car's tank, the equivalent of a full tank for many vehicles. These cost-effective operations were regularly introduced by major retailers in the fall of 2023, at a time when the price of black gold was soaring, particularly as a result of the war in Ukraine. At the time, the price of a liter of gasoline was close to 2 euros. This is no longer the case today, since a liter of unleaded 95 currently sells for an average of 1.68 euros, while diesel costs ten cents less (1.58 euros).

Despite this, major retailers, such as Leclerc last week and Intermarché this weekend, continue to offer fuel "promotions" from time to time. While they don't make any money at their gas stations during these promotions, they hope to attract more customers to their stores to buy their products. For motorists, this remains an easy way to make (small) savings.
