Automobile: how much does your car cost you in insurance?

How much will the car you want cost you to insure? From single to double depending on the make and model, quite logically. A study by the insurance comparison site LeLynx.fr lists the latest figures to make an informed assessment of the costs according to the type of vehicle chosen.
Based on more than 2 million comparisons made, without specifying whether it is new or used, Le Lynx establishes that fully insuring a Dacia costs on average 588 euros when the car insurance premium reaches on average 1,019 euros for a Porsche. A fairly logical difference and which can of course still vary depending on the city where the vehicle is insured.
Teslas also stand out for their particularly high insurance premium. For a comprehensive policy, insuring a car from the Californian brand costs an average of 981 euros, or 67% more than for a Dacia.
And the gap widens even more for a third-party formula. Insuring a Tesla only for damage caused to a third party costs an average of 894 euros per year, compared to an average of 461 euros for a Dacia, a difference of 94%.
In addition, while the cost of car insurance premiums increased significantly between 2024 and 2025, this increase has further increased. Premiums for Dacia vehicles increased by 11% in one year, while those for Tesla jumped by 21%. Repairing an electric car is indeed more expensive than repairing a thermal model.
For similar models, depending on the make of your vehicle, the cost of your car insurance will also be significantly different. A Dacia Sandero, for example, costs an average of 568 euros to insure per year, compared to 926 euros for a Renault Clio V, while both of these cars are small compacts.
The same is true for SUVs: the Dacia Duster costs an average of 532 euros per year to insure, compared to 977 euros for a Renault Arkana and 939 for a Tesla Model Y.
Finally, as far as sedans are concerned, a Toyota Corolla costs on average 663 euros per year in insurance premiums, compared to 1,028 for a BMW 1 Series.
To explain such differences, the study highlights the differences in engine power between vehicles. The value of a vehicle and the power of its engine are in fact determining criteria for insurers. Repair costs are of course also taken into account.
"Electric and hybrid vehicles generate higher repair costs, particularly due to the price of batteries. The availability and cost of spare parts also influences prices, with some premium brands being more expensive to maintain," the study explains.
In addition, the accident and theft rate specific to each make and model also has an impact on the amount of the insurance premium.
However, owners of the least expensive vehicles are not necessarily those who opt least for comprehensive insurance.
In fact, 72% of Dacia vehicle owners opt for a comprehensive car insurance policy.
