Automobile. How is the used car market doing in France?

With nearly 377,000 registrations, the used car market grew slightly in August (+0.1%). The French are mainly turning to older vehicles, while recent models are in sharp decline.
The used car market remains strong, with a slight increase of 0.1% since the beginning of the year. Sales are primarily driven by models over 16 years old, with sales up sharply (+11%). These vehicles remain predominantly diesel-powered (54.9%).
Conversely, recent used cars are suffering: models between 2 and 5 years old are down by more than 10%. Overall, used cars remain essential: more than four times as many used cars are sold as new ones (used/new car ratio at 4.29).
New and electric in retreatThe new-build market saw a slight rebound in August (+2.2%) but remains in the red compared to 2024 (-7.1%) and remains very far from its pre-Covid level (-32% compared to 2019).
In terms of engines, the share of electrified models slowed slightly, to 14.7% compared to 15.5% in July.
